Calling hours for Mathilda "Tillie" Williams, Gouverneur, will be held on Saturday, March 25 from noon to 2p.m. at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with a private graveside service to follow.
Tillie passed away January 29, 2017 in Waldorf, MD.
Born December 1, 1928, she had lived in Gouverneur where she was a longtime member of the auxiliaries of the VFW and American Legion. Tillie enjoyed traveling and could often be found playing bingo with her friends.
Tillie is survived by her sons Blas Watimer and his wife, Joan, of Mifflinburg, PA, Donald Lewis and his wife, Meriam, of Fort Worth, TX, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Robert "Bob" Williams and her daughter Dale.
Wilbur Scott Yerdon
Wilbur Scott Yerdon, age 78, of Gouverneur, passed away on March 3, 2017 at his daughter, Kim’s home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
There was a funeral for Scott on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fowler Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Pastor Howard Maxson officiating. Burial followed in the East Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home in Gouverneur.
Scott was born on November 11, 1938 in Boylston, N.Y. to the late Wilbur and Helen Kastler Yerdon. He graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1956, received his B.S. in Industrial Arts from SUNY Oswego on June 6, 1965, and his Masters degree in School Administration from St. Lawrence University on May 7, 1977.
Mr. Yerdon began his career teaching Industrial Arts at Gouverneur High School and later became the Supervisor of Transportation for the Gouverneur Central School District. His career continued as an Occupational Planner for St Lawrence-Lewis BOCES.
Scott later became a Supervisor of Education for the New York State Department of Corrections, concluding his career in this capacity at the Gouverneur Correctional Facility, where he retired on June 22, 1998.
Scott married Loretta J. Bartholomew on August 13, 1960 in Lacona, N.Y. and enjoyed 45 years of marriage.
Loretta passed away on March 19, 2006. Scott loved his family, good food and great friends. Over the years he enjoyed operating his tractors, riding his Harley, boating on the St. Lawrence River, building and flying his ultralight airplane, target shooting, and driving his BMW convertible.
Scott served on the Mars Hill Good News Translator Committee for WMHR Gouverneur Christian Radio, in a technical and advisory capacity for many years.
Scott is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; Kimberly and Hal Hall of Antwerp, Lisa and Jeff Kirker of Philadelphia; a brother and sister-in-law, Jamie and Bonnie Yerdon; five grandchildren, Megan Hubbard, Kaitlin Hall, Lizabeth Hall, Benjamin Derrigo and Tessa Derrigo; three great-grandchildren, Lyla Grega, Paxton Hanno, and Maverick Hanno; and nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Loretta; and his sister, Sherry Balcom

Frances “Frankie” I. Ferry-Wells, age 91, of Gouverneur, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017 at Summit Village Nursing Home in Watertown.
Frances was born on May 11, 1925 in Watertown, N.Y. to the late Carl and Rose (Petrie) Hart. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1943. She was part owner of Ferry’s Store in Edwards, and was part owner of Wells Construction.
Frankie was a member of the Gouverneur VFW and the Blue Brigade marching unit. She enjoyed bingo and bowling, was an avid sports fan and loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Tim and Sue Alguire and Vincent and Cindy Ferry, both of Gouverneur; four daughters, Joan and Orville Eacker of Gouverneur, Jean and Randy Weidemoyer of Souderton, PA, Lorraine Lawrence of Elysian, MN and Janice and Robert Barbarito of Gouverneur; and 17 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by a son, Ted Alguire, a brother, Kenneth Carl Hart, two sisters Katie Alguire and Margaret Fowler and a grandson Erik Eacker.
There were calling hours on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from noon to 2p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur with her funeral service immediately following at 2p.m., with Pastor Orville Eacker, her son-in-law, officiating. Jake Thomas Ferrick, age 8, of Gouverneur, became an angel on February 26, 2017 and went to Heaven, surrounded by his loving parents, brother, and sister.
A mass will be held on Saturday, March 4 at 11a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Gouverneur with Fr. Shane Lynch officiating. A reception will follow at the St. James Catholic School.
Jake was born in Potsdam on October 16th, 2008, the son of Jason and Angela Weaver Ferrick.
He was a student at St. James Catholic School and enjoyed playingt-ball and Pokémon Go with his Dad. He also enjoyed playing with his best friends John Michael and RJand cousin Tommy. He was the greatest joy to both his Mom and Dad. He will always be remembered for the bright light he was to everyone who knew him.

Dianne M. Calvani, 56, Gouverneur, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017, at Riverledge Healthcare in Ogdensburg, surrounded by the love of her husband, daughter, family, and friends.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 3 at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Gouverneur with Fr. Shane Lynch officiating. Calling hours were on Thursdayat the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Dianne was born on December 22, 1960 in Gouverneur, the daughter of Magno and Gilda Pistolesi Calvani.
She attended St. James School and graduated from Gouverneur High School. Dianne did her undergraduate work at SUNY Potsdam and while in Dallas, she attained her master's degree in sociology.
Dianne was employed by the Salvation Army and at Social Services in Dallas, TX before she returned to the north country and worked at St. Lawrence County Dept. of Social Services.
On February 17, 1987, in Dallas, Dianne married the love of her life, Chester Ford.
Dianne loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed the craft girls group and was a communicant of St. James Church. Dianne devoted many years of work to assisting children and families who were in need. Dianne always considered her most important roles in life being a loving Mom and wife.
Dianne is survived by her husband, Chester, her daughter Shacoria “Cori” Jackson, her many cousins, aunts, and uncles. She is predeceased by her parents and two daughters- Marisa Ford and Logan Ford.

Funeral services for Florence M. Woodward, age 93, of the East Road, Heuvelton were held at 11a.m. on Tuesday (Feb 28, 2017) at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home, with Lay Speaker Margaret Hance officiating. Entombment will follow at Foxwood Memorial Park.
Calling hours were held on Monday from 2 to 4p.m. and6 to 8p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Woodward passed away on Thursday Feb 23, 2017 surrounding by her loving family.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas (Lisa) Woodward of Heuvelton and Robert (Renee’) Woodward of Hurley N.Y.; two daughters, Janis Woodward of Heuvelton, Jane (Sam) Chapman of Holden MO; a sister Lucy Dukett of Saranac Lake; a brother Norman Wilson of Port Henry; son-in-law Ron Khroon of Glens Falls; a sister-in-law Irma Woodward of Gouverneur; grandchildren Tammy Staples, David Woodward, Caellum Woodward, Jillian (Brad) Coelho and Heidi Ostrander; great-grandchildren Devin Woodward, Tec Sgt. Justin Taylor USAF and Andrea Thompson, Jessica Taylor and Wes Schofell, Joshua Woodward, Olivia Coelho, David and Ashley Ostrander, Ethan Burwell and Karle and Kayle McCormick. three great, great grandchildren and one expected around September: Kaydence Ashley, Kendall Schofell, and Evelyn Schofell; several special nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, and two sons, John J. (Jack) and William, two sisters Lillian Johnson and Gladys Simpson and four brothers, Walter, Wilbur, Clarence and Lloyd Wilson.
Florence was born on October 20, 1923 in Huntington, Quebec, a daughter of the late Ernest and Clara (Vondell) Wilson. She graduated from Canton High School and later married John J. Woodward Sr.
During her career she waitressed, worked at Aiello’s Cheese for nine years, babysat many children, and then began her antique business in 1980 which she has operated until recently.
Florence became a naturalized United State citizen, and was very proud of that.
She was a member of St. Lawrence County Antiques Association, Heuvelton Historical Association, DePeyster Methodist Church and former Den Mother for Pack 9. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, dancing, going to Florida, antiquing watching the RFD Channel, meeting new people and spending time with her family.

Raymond Richard “Dick” Shepherd
Raymond Richard “Dick” Shepherd, age 77, of Richville, passed away on February 19, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
Calling hours were held at French Funeral Home in Gouverneur on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 4p.m. to 6p.m. His funeral service will be at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with James Meola officiating. Burial following in the Wayside Cemetery in Richville.
Dick was born on August 19, 1939 in Gouverneur to the late Raymond E. and Ruth F. (Teal) Shepherd. He served in the United States Army from May 6, 1963 until his honorable discharge on May 6, 1965. He married Kareata Jane VanOrnum on July 24, 1965 at the Oxbow Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sinclair officiating.
Dick retired from the St. Lawrence County Building and Grounds crew after working there for 22 years. He had previously worked as a bus driver for Leon LaForty, worked for the Town of Gouverneur, and was an appliance repairman at VanOrnum’s Furniture Store.
In his free time, Dick enjoyed woodworking, restoring antiques, and fishing. He especially loved time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
His survivors include his wife, Jane Shepherd of Richville; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Wade Hazelwood of Marion, IN; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Lori Shepherd of Snellville, GA; a sister, Sue Aldrich of Antwerp; three grandchildren, Brooke Shepherd, Zachary Shepherd, and Trevor Hazelwood; and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Shepherd and Conner Litherland.
He is predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Lynn and Wayne Shepherd.

Harold P. Farren, 77, Gouverneur, passed away at home on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

Harold was born in Fullerville on February 10, 1940, the son of Harold and Thelma Hitchman Farren.
He attended school in Gouverneur and served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1961.
Harold worked for Rouse Construction Company for several years and more recently worked at Fort Drum.
He was a member of the Gouverneur VFW and enjoyed hunting and working in the outdoors.
Harold married Peggy Palmer on April 26, 1985 in Gouverneur.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy, a stepdaughter Laura Looker of Gouverneur, a stepson Lucas Macaulay of Gouverneur, a niece Juanita Farren of California, and three grandchildren Jared Hartle, Bailey Looker, and Elijah Looker. Harold is predeceased by his father Harold, his mother Thelma Lutz, and a brother Dale Farren.

Trina was born in Ankara, Turkey on January 10, 1967, the daughter of Bruce and Judith Narrow Gale.
She graduated from Indian River Central School and lived most of her life in the north country.
Trina had worked at the Clearview Motel for the past 15 years.
She enjoyed crocheting, watching football as an avid Buffalo Bills fan, and enjoyed collecting Buffalo Bills memorabilia.
Trina was previously married to Joseph W. Holmes.
Trina is survived by her son Zachery Holmes of Gouverneur, her parents Judy and David Desormeaux of Antwerp, Bruce D. Gale of Greece, her beloved companion, Fred "Tab" Nicholl of Gouverneur, her siblings Bruce and Claudia Gale of Greece, Joseph and Tara Desormeaux of St. Augustine, FL, Torie Gay of Gouverneur, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Elise Liscum, 81, of Gouverneur, passed away on February 5, 2017 at Massena Memorial Hospital.
There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
Elise was born on November 16, 1935 in DeKalb to the late Laura and Clifton Whitney. She was a homemaker.
Surviving her are daughters Jane and son-in-law Warren Belmore, April Belmore, Eula Whitney, Virginia Bale, Nevins Mackey, Alice VanPatten, and son James “Lucky” Liscum.
Also surviving are grandchildren Chasity Crespin, Megan Dean, David and Haley Liscum, Holly and Leah Liscum and Ethan Belmore. Great-grandchildren are Elyjah Liscum, Alivia Wilson, Noah Crespin, Adam and Zavion Dean, Cash and Leroy Liscum, Trevor Liscum, Carson Liscum, and Gage Liscum. She also has sisters and one brother surviving.

Kenneth R. Bates
Kenneth “Punch” R. Bates, age 86, of Gouverneur, passed away on February 3, 2017 at the United Helpers Maplewood Nursing Home.
Calling hours were held at French Funeral Home in Gouverneur on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 2p.m. to 4p.m. and 6p.m to8 p.m. His funeral service was on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial in the Hailesboro Cemetery.
Ken was born on January 3, 1931 in Redwood to the late Raymond and Beulah (Stanton) Bates. He grew up in Redwood and served in the U.S. Army Reserves until he was honorably discharged.
Punch married Marlene M. Hess on September 1, 1950 in Morristown. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm on the Little Bow Road in Gouverneur for many years. Marlene passed away on October 9, 2005.
Punch enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing cards. He was a member of the Silver Sands Hunting Club and former member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge.
His survivors include four children, Michael and Deborah Bates, Kathy and Wayne Bishop, Lisa and Greg Nichols, Stephen Bates and his companion, Christine Cognetti; a sister-in-law, Marion Barr; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents, his wife, Marlene, brothers Robert, Oren “Tim” and Earl, and a half brother, Jeff Turner.

Grace Viola Hutton, 86, Macomb, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at Riverledge Health Care in Ogdensburg where she had resided the past two years.
A funeral service will be held Friday, February 10 at 11a.m. at the Green Funeral Home in Gouverneur with pastor Rachel Roberts of the Chaumont Presbyterian Church officiating and burial in Pleasant Lake Cemetery in Brasie Corners.
Grace was born on September 21, 1930 in Gouverneur, the daughter of Clarence and Grace Kyer Cummings.
She attended Gouverneur High School and married Carlton R. Hutton on March 25, 1949 at the Gouverneur First Methodist Church parsonage with Rev. Harold A. Thomas officiating.
Grace was active as a 4-H leader for the Macomb Sunshine Club, served in the Gouverneur Central School Parent-Teacher Association, was a member of the Milestone Birthday Club, and the Presbyterian Church of Brasie Corners. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, knitting, and sewing.
Grace and her daughter Judy owned and operated the White Goose Custom Sewing Shop for several years. She also worked beside her husband on the family dairy farm on the Hutton Road and then with her son running the farm after Carlton passed away in 1997.
She is survived by her children Judy and Tom Wood of Philadelphia, Dale Hutton and his fiance Mary Ann Babcock of Macomb and Binghamton, Joy and Ted Markwick of Gouverneur, her two sisters Claire Bartholomew of Arlington, VA and Mary Kirker of Oxbow. Grace also has five grandchildren: Michele Wood Parks and her husband Ed of Baldwinsville, Tracey Wood Fuller and her husband Matt of Hudson, Jana Wood Gately and her husband Michael of Philadelphia, Sarah Markwick Pawananon and her husband Pat of Gouverneur, Jonathan Markwick and Casey McBroom of Gouverneur. Grace also enjoyed the company of her 12 great grandkids. She is predeceased by her three brothers John, David, and Thomas Cummings.

John Daniel Wolfe, 62, Russell, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Van Duyn Home in Syracuse.
A graveside service was held on Saturday, February 4 at 12noon at the Hermon Cemetery with Charles Colton of the Russell Pilgrim Holiness Church officiating. Arrangements were with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Dan was born in Canton on May 28, 1954, the son of John Albert and Betty Davis Wolfe.
He attended Knox Memorial School and attended BOCES for electrical training.
Dan married Pamela S. Colton, and the couple has resided many years in Russell where they raised a family and Dan worked as a rural mail carrier for 35 years.
Dan enjoyed watching shows on and studying history, collected rocks, stamps, and coins, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Pam, his children Scott of Russell, Daniel of Russell, Sherry and Brad Cordwell of Madrid, Kristine and Elmer Phillips of Colton, and his seven grandchildren. Dan is predeceased by his parents and 2 grandchildren.

Marjorie was born in Hammond on June 27, 1933, the daughter of John and Lula Halladay Elliott.
She married James "Raymond" Smith on October 15, 1960 in Canton.
Raymond, a retired dairy farmer, passed away on November 6, 2011.
Marjorie was a homemaker and a busy mother, raising a family of 11 children. She enjoyed playing bingo, visiting the casino, reading, and spending time with her family.
Marjorie is survived by eight children: Ronnie and Billie Jo of Gouverneur, Kevin of Brier Hill, Brian and Janet of Dexter, Tracy and Yvonne of Massena, Brenda and Mike Saidel of Gouverneur, Rosemary and Willis Smith of Gouverneur, Cindy and Marcus Scutt of Hudson, Penny and Robert Stalker of Valatie, a daughter-in-law Joanne Smith of Philmont, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren.

William Robinson Vorce, age 84, of Gouverneur, passed away on February 1, 2017 at the Gouverneur Hospital.
He married Dorothy LaFountain in Madrid, N.Y. on August 26, 1955. Mr. Vorce worked for Niagara Mohawk and then National Grid for 38 years before his retirement.

Connie was born on July 8, 1948 in Gouverneur to the late Earl H. and Edna I. (Booth) House. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1966. She worked at Jumbo’s Diner as a waitress and short order cook for many years. She had also previously worked at Turners Truck Stop. As her grandchildren came, she would frequently babysit them for her daughters. Connie enjoyed doing her scratch off tickets and also liked doing word search puzzles.
Surviving are two daughters, Lena and Ronald Bush and Tonya House; seven grandchildren, Aaron Bush, Alec House-Baillargeon, Cailyn House-Baillargeon, Nevaeh House-Hall, Haydn House-Hall, Niciara House-Bowman and Amirian House-Bowman; two great grandchildren, Klyrissa and Kendall Bush; and a brother, Mike House and several nieces and nephews.
Connie is predeceased by seven brothers, Lyle, Aubrey, Howard “Buster”, Carlton, Dan, Ralph and Richard and two sisters, Judith House- Passage and Joyce House Terry.

Helen Gray
Helen (née Reynolds) Gray of Ontario, Canadadied at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the age of 64 years. Helen was the beloved wife of Douglas Gray, dear sister of Robert, Randy, Rosie and Suzie.
She was predeceased by her parents Hugh and Ardis (née Conklin) Reynolds.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at a later date.

Jane M. Gleason
Jane M. Gleason, 73, of Holkins Rd., Philadelphia, N.Y. passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, surrounded by her sisters.
Born on October 12, 1943 in Theresa, she was a daughter of Michael A. and Helen A. Pogozelski Martusewicz.
Jane married Harry L. Gleason on July 15, 1970. He died July 6, 2016.
The couple enjoyed square dancing and going to farm auctions.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Yvonne Dickhaut, Ohio; a step-daughter and her companion, Tina Greenlee and Randy Heidelbach, Georgia; her mother, Helen A. Gamble, Watertown; three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Joan (her twin) and Norm Whiteford, Antwerp, NY, Kathy and Gary Rust, Gouverneur, and Patricia and Frank Folino, Rodman, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Ruth Hoover, Philadelphia, NY and Edith and Ivan Filiatrault, Antwerp; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Roy Gleason and his companion, Faye Morris of North Carolina, Elmer and Rose Gleason, Philadelphia, N.Y. and Delos and Patricia Gleason, Philadelphia, N.Y.; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her father, her husband, a daughter, Vickey Webb, a step-son, Randy Gleason and a grandson, Jessie Webb, all died before her.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday, January 23, 2017 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with Rev. Christopher Looby of St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Philadelphia, NY, officiating. Burial will be in Oxbow Cemetery, Oxbow, N.Y.
Calling hours were from 11a.m. to1 p.m., prior to the service.
