Carlton D. Brown

Carlton D. Brown died October 11, 2018 at 5:30 a.m. at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida. He was born April 6, 1927, son of Earl and Ethel (Laidlaw) Brown, near Gouverneur, New York. He attended grade school at the neighborhood school on the Johnstown Road and then on to Gouverneur High School.

Carlton married Martha E. McCrea on May 23, 1947 at Richville, New York.

He was a dairy farmer most of his life, owning farms near Antwerp and finally near Philadelphia, New York.

He and Martha had 3 children, Gloria, Richard, and Earl. They took in foster babies and eventually adopted two – David and Patti – to complete their family.

In 1977 Carlton moved his family to Palm Beach County, Florida, living at North Palm Beach and then Jupiter, Florida where he lived up to five years ago.

He and Martha divorced in 1984.

Carlton worked as a groundsman at the North Palm Beach Country Club, starting at the age of 72. He always enjoyed working outdoors and meeting people.

He is survived by his children, Gloria Jenkins, Philadelphia, New York, Earl, West Palm Beach, Florida, David, Jupiter, Florida, and Patti, address unknown. Also by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, 2 sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, stepfather, son Richard, daughter-in-law Joan, brother Emerson.

He had resided at the Isles of View Beach, Florida, the past 4 years after suffering a fall at his home in Jupiter. He moved to be closer to his daughter, Gloria, who lived in Vero Beach at that time.

A memorial service will be at the cemetery next year at the convenience of the family in Gouverneur, New York.

A graveside service will be held for John R. Manson of Macomb on Sunday, October 14th at 1:30 pm at Riverside Cemetery, Rossie with a celebration of life to follow at the Rossie Community Center. Mr. Manson, 72, passed away on December 25, 2017.

Robert Paul Rice

Robert Paul Rice, 71, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 in Gouverneur.
There are no funeral services and arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Paul was born in Canton on June 7, 1947 and was raised by his parents Lloyd and Eva Peck Rice on the family farm in Macomb.
He enjoyed gardening, drawing and painting, spending time outdoors and with his dog. Paul also enjoyed searching for and collecting Indian artifacts, rocks, and minerals. He was a member of several mineralogy associations including the St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club and had donated mineral specimens to the local colleges and museums.
Paul is survived by his nieces and nephews Bruce Rice of Macomb, Mary Rice of Hammond, Jane Zeller of Fowler, Bobby Rice of Pillar Point, several great nieces and great nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, a brother Forrest Rice, a niece Patsy Liscum and nephews David and Emerson Rice.
Memorial donations in Paul's memory may be made to the St. Lawrence County Rock & Mineral Club.

Robert G. “Bob” Tripp

Robert G. "Bob" Tripp, 79 passed away on Friday June 08, 2018 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse.   As per Bob's wishes a private family graveside service will held at Hailesboro Cemetery.  
Robert is survived by his wife Phyllis, two sons Robert Jr. of Richville, and Brian of Fowler; two daughters Deborah and her husband Kevin Hadfield of Fowler, and Carol and her husband Piere Besaw of Fowler; eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.  He is also survived by two sisters; Faye Stronach of Gouverneur, and Bernice Lariccio of Binghamton. He is predeceased by two sisters, Jean Bowman and Louise Conklin.
Bob was born on February 15, 1939 in Ogdensburg, a son of the late Carl and Eva Baker Tripp.  On December 01, 1958 he married the love of his life, Phyllis Fuller at the Gouverneur First United Methodist Church Parsonage with Rev. Wood officiating. Bob and Phyllis celebrated their marriage together for 59 years.
Bob owned and operated several businesses over the years.  He operated a construction company, he operated Bob's Market and diner in Fowler, and also Tripp Fuel Company in Fowler.  Bob was a life member of the Gouverneur Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed raising Honey Bees and operating heavy equipment and spending time at his camp in Waddington.

A funeral service for Iva Storie will be held on Saturday, June 16th at 2:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with her burial to follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammond. Calling hours are 1-2 pm on Saturday, previous to the funeral and 6-8 pm, Friday evening. Iva passed away on February 25th, 2018.

Garnet A. Hills

Garnet A. Hills, 86, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 5th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Gouverneur American Legion. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Garnet was born in DeKalb on June 5, 1931, the son of Albert and Vivian Lucus Hills.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and worked at Groveton Paper Mill for nearly 20 years before working for the Town of Gouverneur, retiring as town superintendent in 1992.
Garnet married Mary K. Casey on June 10, 1961 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley E. Brown officiating.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping, especially at Westcott Beach, but most of all, enjoyed spending time with family.
Garnet is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary, his 2 daughters Janet E. and Carl Rivers Jr. of Calcium, Sharon A. Liscum of Gouverneur, his son Brian Hills of Gouverneur, 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandsons, several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, a brother William Hills, a sister Marjorie Morse, and a son-in-law Kurt Liscum.

David Spaulding

RICHVILLE – David Alan Spaulding, age 65, of Richville, passed away on April 7, 2018 at home.
David was born on June 3, 1952 in Gouverneur to the late Wesley J. and Ruth H. (Raven) Spaulding. He graduated from the Gouverneur Central School in 1970, Canton ATC, and from Syracuse University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree.
David served in the United States Army Reserves from 1972 until his honorable discharge in 1978. He worked for many years for Lockheed Martin in Syracuse as a Quality Control Manager, gaining access to the highest security clearance information and traveling across the world.
He loved technology and was often sought by family and friends for research and assistance. He had an interest in genealogy and found the importance of family and history.
His survivors include his son, Anthony “Tony” Spaulding of Auburn, NY; his brother, Wayne Billups of Groton, NY; 2 sisters, Gayle Spaulding of Baldwinsville, NY and Karen Jordan of Houston, TX.
David is predeceased by his parents and a sister, Joan Stenzel.
