Alma Rumble

Alma Rumble, 96, passed away on Sunday September 1, 2019 at Riverledge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 7th from 12:00 to 2:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur and burial at New St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur.

Alma was born in Gouverneur on July 31, 1923, the daughter of Everett and Bertha (Allen) Markwick.

She graduated from Gouverneur High School and the Watertown School of Commerce.

Alma married L. Roger Rumble in Gouverneur on August 31, 1946.

She worked in New York City, returned to the Gouverneur area to work for Bell Telephone Company, worked as a bookkeeper for Gouverneur Talc and E.J. Noble Hospital, and retired as a secretary for Gouverneur Central School.

Alma enjoyed knitting and was active in the Gouverneur Garden Club, Gouverneur Business Women, E.J. Noble Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and volunteered at the Gouverneur Museum. She also belonged to the Gouverneur Bridge Club and a knitting club.

Alma is survived by her children Sharon and John Ayen of Maine, Scott and Linda Rumble of Fowler, Melvin Rumble of Gouverneur, and Drew Rumble of Fowler, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Roger who passed away on January 13, 1996, her parents, and two brothers Paul Markwick and Everett Markwick Jr.

Doreen M. Byrns

Doreen M. Byrns, age 79, of Hermon, passed away on September 3, 2019 at home.

Doreen was born on January 7, 1940 in the town of Gouverneur. She was a daughter of the late Arnold D. and Ardis B. (Venton) Byrns. She attended school in Hailesboro and graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1957. Doreen continued her education at SUNY Albany, studying social studies before receiving her Associate degree as a Veterinary Technician from SUNY Delhi in 1975.

Miss Byrns worked as a Veterinary Technician from 1975 until her retirement in 2003. She had worked for the Great Net Animal Hospital as well as the Bide-A-Wee Home Association Animal Hospital on Long Island.

Doreen lived on Long Island from 1976 until moving back to Northern New York in Hermon upon her retirement. She loved animals, her church and tending her garden and provided altar flowers for the Hermon Methodist Church for many years.

Her survivors include two brothers and their wives, Mark and Lori Byrns of Middlebury, CT, Brian and Cassie Byrns of Fayetteville, NY; and three sisters, Sandra and Luther Cole of PA, Gail Thomas of Gouverneur, and Sharon and David McWilliam of Ottawa, Canada. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. immediately followed by her funeral service at 3:00 p.m. officiated by John Frary. Burial will take place in the Spragueville Cemetery.

Douglas E. Nichols

Douglas E. Nichols, born March 6, 1959 in Gouverneur, NY to Donald and Cora Taylor Nichols, passed away Jul 28, 2019 surrounded by family at the VA Medical Center in Cleveland, OH due to complications from surgery.

Doug worked at family operated Exxon station in Gouverneur, NY, before joining US Navy. After the Navy, Doug drove long haul trucks traveling through out the US. Recently retiring from trucking, he was the families go to guy for auto repairs, carpenter work and all around fix it man.

He is preceded in death by his mom, Cora Nichols, sister-in-law Jackie Nichols, nephew Andrew Lehman and niece Andrea Lehman Owens. Doug is survived by his father Donald Nichols of Antwerp, NY, wife Rachel Towns-Nichols their two sons Caleb and Steven, sons Nathan Spedding of NY and Darren Nichols of FL, two daughters Nicole Nichols and Tara Nichols Watson (Greg), of PA four sisters Linda Johnson (Fred), Betty Scott, Vicki Girardin (Frank), Liz Bowman (Charlie), brother Dana Nichols, three grandchildren CJ, Emma and Olivia, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Doug was interred at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd, Rittman, OH 44370 in the Veterans Memorial Wall on Aug 29, 2019 at 10 am. Our son, brother, husband, dad, grandfather and uncle will surely be missed by all. RIP, Doug.

Edna M. Scott

Edna M. Scott, 79, passed away on Thursday morning, August 29, 2019, at Central Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Syracuse.

Edna was born on August 6, 1940, in Gouverneur NY, the daughter of Audrey K. (Foy) Scott and Wilmot Scott. She graduated from Gouverneur High School and attended Albany Business School. She worked at Kinneys Drug Store and Wausau Northeastern Division of Nationwide Insurance Co. as a Senior Group Sales Representative until her retirement in 1999.

She had been a member of the Syracuse Federation Women's Clubs and past president of the Syracuse Insurance Professionals.

Edna is survived by her sister Janette (Scott) and Larry Corey and enjoyed her nieces Pamela and Robert Hack with 3 children, Julie and Christopher Lapointe with 2 children and Amy and John Winslow with 3 children.

Her activities were playing cards, reading books, eating out, being with friends, watching movies and theater, spending summers on the St. Lawrence River, and traveling.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 31st at 3:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Martha Helmer, lay minister, officiating.

Eric Duane "Orville" Hubbard

Eric Duane "Orville" Hubbard, 44, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at his home.

A celebration of life was held on Saturday, August 10th at the Gouverneur Community Center and arrangements were with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Eric was born on July 1, 1975 in Gouverneur, the son of Duane Earl and Karen L. (Coffie) Hubbard.

He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1995 and spent most of his life working in Gouverneur, including employment at P&C Supermarket, DJ Walter's Chevrolet, Walton's Auto Sales, and most recently, Team Blevins LLC.

Orv was always there for his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved listening to music, hunting, fishing, fourwheeling, and woodworking. He also enjoyed mallard ducks, detailing vehicles, and being an uncle.

Orville is survived by his parents Duane and Karen, his sisters Lynnette and Kole Burgess of Richville, Heather Hubbard and her companion Jason Bouchey of Gouverneur, nieces Madison Hubbard and Megan Hubbard, nephews Caleb Hubbard, Tegan Burgess, Brayden Scott, and Alexander Scott. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother Edna Coffie of Harrisville as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is predeceased by his grandparents Earl and Joanne Hubbard, Gerold Coffie, and two uncles.

Linda L. Mandigo

Linda L. Mandigo, 71, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at her home, surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

A celebration of life was held by her family on Saturday, August 24th from 12:00 to 6:00 pm at the family home at 178 County Route 10, Redwood, NY 13679, town of Rossie. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Linda was born on February 24, 1948 in Watertown and was raised by her parents Charles and Mabel (Bronson) Belcher.

She married George C. "Sonny" Mandigo Sr. on April 10, 1966 at the Gouverneur First Methodist Church.

Linda enjoyed listening to music, dancing, and was a history buff, serving as the town of Rossie historian for many years. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, whether it be racing at the track or just having a cookout at home.

Linda is survived by her husband of 53 years Sonny, her 4 sons George Jr. and Rubyjo of Fowler, Mike and Patti of Gouverneur, James "Cricket" and Jennifer Brown of Rossie, John and Pam of Kentucky, several grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Richard Belcher of Florida, James Belcher of North Carolina, several nieces and nephews. Linda is predeceased by her parents and her siblings Sue Moore, Patricia Turcott, Butch Belcher, and Louise Belcher.

Karen E. Jenkins

Karen Elaine Jenkins, age 65, of Richville, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 15, 2019 surrounded by her family, at Burlington Medical Center in Vermont.

Karen was born on June 22, 1954 in Gouverneur, NY to the late Darrell and Esther (MacTurk) Stevenson. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1973. She married Harold Jenkins Jr. in November of 1978 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church.

Karen worked for 34 years at United Helpers in Canton as a certified nurses’ aide. She enjoyed reading, spending time with her family, bowling, traveling and going on cruises and going to the casino. Karen had a special fondness for Sylvia Lake. She also loved her two feline companions, Conrad and Mitten. Karen and her sisters had a very special bond.

She is survived by her husband, Harold; a son and his wife, Mark and Karen Jenkins grandchildren Jonathan, Kayla and Mike Howard their children Hayden, Ava and Quinn; Ashley and Dean Witherell their children Joey, Connor, and Mason; Thomas and Kylea Plantz their children Treyton, and Trevor; Richard Butts III and his son Ricky IIII; two step children, Carrie and Scott Beaulieu a granddaughter Kara; Cindy and Eric Parson their children Aidan and Madi; and four sisters, Sharon and Warren Lennox, Gagi and Thomas Pollina, Brenda Nowacki; Joanne and Eric Strobel.

Karen is predeceased by a sister, Mary Nier.

Jane Wranesh

Jane Wranesh, 98, passed away, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 after a brief illness.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 19th at 10:00 am at St. James Catholic Church, Gouverneur with Fr. Stephen Rocker officiating and burial in Hailesboro Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Jane was born on August 16, 1920 in Oxbow, the daughter of Francis and Georgia Weidman Ridsdale.

She graduated from Antwerp High School in 1938 and attended Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse for nurses training. Jane served in the Army Nurse Corps during WW II in Britain and France.

In the midst of a memorable snow storm, Jane married Michael Wranesh on February 10, 1947 at St. James Church, Gouverneur with Fr. Diviney officiating.

She was employed as a registered nurse in Gouverneur at Van Duzee Hospital and EJ Noble Hospital, worked for the St. Lawrence County Physically Handicapped Children's Program for 12 years, and in retirement, at the Gouverneur Library for 12 years.

The couple lived in Hailesboro since 1947 in the home they built. Jane was a member of St. James Parish, Hailesboro Home Bureau, and was a community volunteer. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and gardening. In her later years, phone calls were a great source of enjoyment.

Jane is survived by her children Mary Lou and John Cook of Clinton, Peter and Robin Wranesh of Pennellville, Jim and Cindy Wranesh of Gouverneur, her grandchildren Tracy Szelest, Stacey Wranesh-Roberts, Todd Wranesh, Ryan Wranesh, Kris Carr, Jason Carr, Ken Cook, and Lisa Denny, 13 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Mike who passed away on May 27, 2013. Jane is also predeceased by her parents, sisters Catherine Wood and Irene Miner, brothers James Ridsdale, Bill Ridsdale and George Ridsdale.

William D. Reynolds

William D. "Bill" Reynolds, 99, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at United Helpers Maplewood in Canton.

There will be no funeral services and arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

William was born on November 14, 1919, the son of William and Bernice (Williams) Reynolds.

He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1938 and married M. Jean Anderson in 1944.

Bill owned and operated a dairy farm and Reynolds Stables in Richville. He enjoyed his horses, winning many heavy weight championships, and was especially proud of his team that took first place in New York State in 1977.

Bill is survived by his children Roxanne Reynolds of Austin, TX, Gary Reynolds of Richville, Brad and Sheila Reynolds of Antwerp, Amy and Richard Gladle of Cape Vincent, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Elaine Gruneisen of Gouverneur, Jean Reynolds of Fowler, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, a brother Welby Reynolds and a sister Margaret Clark.

Edwin E. Bresett

Edwin E. Bresett, 81, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 16th from 10:00 to 11:30 am with a memorial service to follow at 11:30 am at Mercy Point Church in Gouverneur with Pastor Sean Silkwood officiating. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Edwin was born in Rossie on November 29, 1937, the son of Earl and Zella (Perry) Hunter.

Ed grew up on the family farm on the Old Northerner Road near DeKalb, raised by his adopted parents Charles and Ethel Bresett. He graduated from Hermon-Dekalb Central School in 1955 and worked on the farm, eventually taking over and operating the farm for several years. Ed also worked at Gouverneur Talc Company, retiring in 2002.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, puttering around the house and garage, and as his children put it, trying to dance.

Ed married Jeanne C. Benware on September 2, 1960.

He is survived by his children Christine and Henry LaQuier of Rensselaer Falls, Mitchell and Ian Bresett - McCormick of Colton, his grandchildren Matthew LaQuier and his wife Melissa Proulx of Canton, Adam LaQuier and his fiance Jordan Hokaj of Lancaster, NY. Ed is predeceased by his parents, adopted parents, 3 half brothers Donald Gibson, Alton Gibson and Alger Gibson, 2 half sisters Joyce Hadley and Katherine Tolworthy.

Helen N. Blance

Funeral services for Helen N. Blance, age 93 of Heuvelton were held on Monday (Aug 12, 2019) at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Nichols officiating. Burial will follow at Oldsville Cemetery in the Town of Macomb.

Calling hours were held also on Monday from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. An Eastern Service was held at 1:30pm at the funeral home during calling hours. Mrs. Blance passed away on Thursday (August 8, 2019) at her home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice.

Surviving are her children Linda (Ivan) Coant of Fulton, Noreen Butterfield of Heuvelton and Cindi (James) Frederick of Macomb; nine grandchildren James (Jennifer) Coant of Syracuse, Charles (Sandra) Coant of Hannibal, Michael (Kimmi) Coant of Fulton, Beth (David) Pechey of Hammond, William (Francine) Butterfield of Ogdensburg, Alisa Tanner of Fulton, Robert Tanner of Fulton, Jason Tanner of Delaware, Salina Bacon of Heuvelton, David & Loren Putman of Hammond; great-grandchildren Daniel, Tyler, Mackenzie & Sam Coant, Chance Darien, Marissa & Abigale Tanner, Jasmine Mason, Patrick Youngs, Anthony, Dominic, Damien & Dontee Butterfield; great-great-grandchildren Wayne Chambers & Liam Samarco; a brother Howard Shippee of Canton along with many nieces, nephews & cousins.

Her husband James and a daughter Lorraine Tanner predeceased her.

Helen was born on February 25, 1926 in Antwerp, a daughter of the late Charles & Marion (Fleming) Shippee. She attended Antwerp School for her education, and later married James A. Blance on December 24, 1945 at the home of her parents.

Helen sold Avon products for many years, assisted her husband with the farm, worked at Coville’s General Store in Pope Mills and was active with the Macomb election board for years. She was a member of the De Peyster United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Stars St. Lawrence Chapter 60.

Helen enjoyed working at church, involvement with the Grange and Eastern Stars, reading, gardening and spending time with her family. Jeanette Elizabeth (French) Hughes

Jeanette Elizabeth (French) Hughes passed away on July 24, 2019 in Myakka City, FL., at the age of 91. She was born on April 3, 1928 in Russell, New York, to parents Raymond James French and Margie Nina (Barry) French. She was pre-deceased by her two brothers Leon James French (1987) and Harold Gregory French (1944, killed in WW II).

She married her high school sweetheart William M. (Bill) Hughes on January 22, 1949. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2007.

She is survived by her daughter Marlea J. Hughes (Wanda Knipp) of Myakka City, FL., and her son Gregory M. Hughes (Eileen) of Naples, FL. She is also survived by five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was a Registered Nurse. Upon graduating from high school in 1945 as valedictorian of her class, she enrolled in the Cadet Nurse Corps. This was a Federal program started in 1943 to help alleviate the nursing shortage which existed during WWII. Her education was free and she received $20 a month during her training. She graduated from the nursing program at Plattsburgh State Teachers’ College (now SUNY Plattsburgh) in 1948. As a senior cadet nurse, she was required to spend the final 6 months of schooling working full time in a civilian or federal hospital. She spent this time working in New York City, where she remembered seeing Ethel Merman on Broadway in “Annie Get Your Gun”.

In 1956 with her husband and two children, she moved from Russell, NY. to Sarasota, FL. In the late 1950’s the family home was just a few miles from the Ringling Circus winter quarters. Her children remember standing in the backyard at dusk on winter evenings and hearing the lions roar and the elephants trumpet.

In Sarasota she worked as the office nurse of Dr. Fred Droege (Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergy) from the late 1950’s until his retirement in the 1980’s.

She was an active participant in the Nurses’ Health Study for over 40 years. This is a series of prospective studies established in 1976 which investigate the risk factors for major chronic diseases in women.

Jeanette enjoyed her family, her work, and her pets. In 2001 she and Bill moved to Myakka City, FL., where she loved taking care of her flowers and growing vegetables. One of her greatest enjoyments was playing a game of Rummy while conversing with family and friends.

A Graveside Service will be held 10:30 am, Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Manasota Memorial Park in Bradenton, Florida.

Lenore Helen Montigne

Lenore Helen Montigne (Toomey), 75, of Lake Saint Louis, MO, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2019.

Lenore was the life of the party. She was a master at bridge and mahjong and loved a good competition. You could find her at the card table taking a gamble on her luck. Her strength and tenacity to find joy in life were infectious, and she lived her life to the absolute fullest.

Lenore leaves behind her husband Mike Montigne of Lake Saint Louis, MO, her sister, Marilyn Dame of Mechanicville, NY, and her nieces Genevieve Dame and Caitlin Richmond of Atlanta, GA, and Diana Dame of Aspen, CO.

Lorraine A. Roberts

Lorraine A. Roberts, 78, of Burrville, passed away on Thursday July 25, 2019 at her home.

Calling hours were on Tuesday, July 30th from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon with a funeral service at noon at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur and burial to follow in Hermon Cemetery.

Lorraine was born on March 5, 1941, the daughter of Earle and Mildred (Cook) Noble.

She graduated from Knox Memorial School in 1959 and from the House of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in 1962 as a registered nurse. Her clinical nursing included 5 months in New York City and 3 months at the hospital in Ogdensburg.

Lorraine worked in the office of Dr. Finnerty in Watertown before employment at Alice-Hyde Hospital in Malone. She began working at the House of the Good Samaritan in 1974 and retired from Samaritan Medical Center in 2003. Her career in nursing was defined by her compassion for her patients and as a preceptor for starting nurses.

She was a member of the Samaritan Centennials and enjoyed cooking for her family, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, affectionately known as her “six pack”.

Lorraine is survived by her two sons Timothy E. and Brenda A. Roberts of Copenhagen Thomas C. and Angela M. Roberts of Watertown, her 6 grandchildren Rebeka, Justin, Emma, Colton, Donald, and Noah. She is predeceased by her parents and a brother E. Laurence "Larry" Noble.

Mary E. McClure

Mary E. McClure, age 99, of Gouverneur, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2019 under the care of Hospice.

Mary was born on December 28, 1919 in Gouverneur to the late Clarence and Harriett (Bassett) Conklin. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1939. Mary married Allan P. McClure on August 7, 1948 in Philadelphia, NY with Rev. Shumway officiating. Allan passed away on June 9, 1971.

Mary worked as a teacher’s aide at Gouverneur Central school until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of the Home Bureau and Tops Club. She enjoyed traveling all over with the senior citizens, she made many wedding cakes and did clothing alterations all of her life. She also loved her cats.

Surviving are two sons, Leslie and Ruth McClure and David McClure and his companion, Nancy Spilman; two sisters, Joan Sheen and Kay and John Perry and four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mary is predeceased by her husband, parents, two brothers, Herbert and Francis Conklin and two sisters, Margaret Bressett and Erlene Moussaw.

Robert Hull, Sr.

Robert "Bob" Hull, Sr., 73, formerly of Oxbow, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, July 23, 2019, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Calling hours were held on Thursday, July 25th from 10:00 to 11:00 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur and burial in Oxbow Cemetery.

Robert was born on July 10, 1946 in Gouverneur to Albert "Tiny" and Anita (LaPierre) Hull.

He married Bonnie Versailles on July 2, 1966, and the couple just celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Bob was a former employee of New York Air Brake and the paper mill in Natural Dam. He performed carpentry work and had many hobbies such as hunting, fishing, gardening, and playing cards. Bob enjoyed woodworking and building things for his family and friends. He also enjoyed working on his vehicles and used to belong to a homing pigeon racing club.

Bob was a Red Cross blood donor and was recognized by New York State for donating over 20 plus gallons of his rare AB RH negative blood. He also had been a member of the Oxbow Volunteer Fire Department and their auxiliary. Most of all, Bob enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Bob was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Family members who are left behind to cherish his memory include his wife Bonnie, their four children Robert Jr. and Stella Hull, Amelia Hull and Larry, Scott and Jessica Hull, and Angela Hull, his grandchildren Scott Hull Jr., Brittni Hull, Joseph Hull, Miracle Hull, Brandon Gibbs, John, Josh, and Aaron Baker. He is also survived by his two brothers Donald and Cindy Hull, Albert and Diane Hull, his sisters-in-law Patricia Burns, Cecelia McCall, and Julie Versailles, brothers-in-law Randy Fleming and Chuck Burns, many nieces and nephews. Bob is predeceased by his parents and two grand babies.

Robert W. Simmons

Robert “Bob” W. Simmons, 41, passed away in his sleep peacefully on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at his family home.

Robert was affectionately known as Robbie and Bob by his family and Bugsplat by his nieces and nephews. He was born on July 24, 1977 to Phillip and Connie (Bush) Simmons.

In 1997, he graduated from Gouverneur High School and went on to proudly enlist in the United States Army for 4 years. Following his honorable discharge from active service, Robbie continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves at Fort Drum where he eventually deployed to Iraq for a year. After his service, Robbie worked as a civilian at Fort Drum as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer for 13 years.

Outside of work, he enjoyed bowling, golf, and watching sports, especially rooting on the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Not keen on ties or pants, you could find Robbie in shorts through all four seasons and he never left home without a ball cap or his sense of humor. He loved to believe he was the world’s greatest driver and when he was feeling smug, he would annoy his siblings with Johnny Cash sing-a-longs in the tune of off key.

Robert is survived by his father and best friend, Phillip, and mother, Connie, of Gouverneur, his sister Jo and her husband Richard Elliot of Lillington, NC, his brother John Simmons and his companion Amber Willard of Norwood, his nieces and nephews Erin Elliot, Christopher Elliot, Zachary Simmons, Kaitlyn Simmons, Morgan Williams, Liam Willard as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Calling hours were held on Sunday, July 7th, 12:00 to 2:00 pm followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home in Gouverneur with Dave Hart officiating and burial with Military Honors in East DeKalb Cemetery.

Walter F. Payne

Walter F. Payne, 92, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Highland Nursing Home in Massena.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 13th at 10:00 am at Hailesboro Cemetery with Rev. Richard Mayforth, pastor of Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church officiating. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Walter was born on October 4, 1926, the son of Charles and Doris (Lamb) Payne.

He attended Gouverneur schools and lived on the family farm on the Smith Road most of his life.

Walt attended electrical classes and did some electrical contracting while operating the farm. He also drove a milk route for Borden's Milk, worked for the Oswegatchie Power Company, and for 46 years operated Payne Brothers Shop in Hailesboro with his brother Don, specializing in small engine repairs and sales.

Walt had been a member of the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum, the Odd Fellows, and enjoyed collecting marbles, hunting, fishing, and had obtained a pilot's license.

He is survived by his brother Donald and Memory Payne of Gouverneur, a niece Janet Fleming, 2 nephews Alan Fleming and Carl Fleming. He is predeceased by his parents and a sister Betty Fleming.

Joan Perrin

Joan A. Perrin, age 84, died on July 5, 2019 at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, Oswego, NY. She had been a resident of Antwerp and Harrisville, NY.

Born May 6, 1935 in Gouverneur, NY, she was a daughter of Clifford A. Hance (deceased) and Isabelle Howard Hance (deceased). Joan lived in Balmat, NY, attended Balmat Grammar School and graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1953. After leaving GHS, she attended and graduated with honor from Central City Business Institute, Syracuse, NY, where she obtained a Medical Secretarial Diploma.

After graduation, Joan moved to Newark, NY, where she worked as a medical secretary for two doctors at the Newark State School for Mentally Retarded. She married Richard D. Perrin, former resident of Gouverneur, serving in the United States Air Force at Geneva, NY (Sampson AF Base). They were married in the St. James Catholic Church in Gouverneur on November 27, 1954.

After their wedding, they returned to Newark, where they lived several years while Dick served in the Air Force. Their son, John Alan, was one of the last babies born at Sampson AF Base before the base closed in May 1956.

Mrs. Perrin accompanied her husband on his moves to numerous Air Force bases while he was in the service. She often remarked those years were some of the happiest and most interesting times of their lives. While Chief Master SGT Perrin was in the AF, Joan was a volunteer at many AF Base facilities and at many schools her son attended in the States and in Germany. They lived in Omaha, Neb., Washington DC area, Wiesbaden, Germany; and Scott AFB, ILL. She also was active in the Cub Scouts while they were stationed in Virginia. In Germany she was active in the NCO Wives Club and was a Gray Lady volunteer at the Wiesbaden USAF Hospital.

After Chief Master SGT Perrin retired in 1974, they returned to Northern New York and moved to Antwerp, NY. Mrs. Perrin worked 12 years at E.J. Noble Hospital in Gouverneur in medical records. After leaving E.J. Noble, she was hired as secretary to the Area Engineer, New York District Corps of Engineers on Ft. Drum during the expansion of the Fort Drum to accommodate the 10th Mountain Division. After leaving the Corps of Engineers, she was secretary to the Environmental Division of Ft. Drum. Working at Ft. Drum gave her great satisfaction as she enjoyed working with the military and civilian personnel.

After retirement Joan and her husband spent a number of years traveling to Lake Bonaparte for the summers and Ellenton, FL for the winters.

Mrs. Perrin enjoyed reading, music, swimming, and the company of her friends. She is survived by her husband, Richard, a son, John, daughter-in-law Martha of Oswego NY and nieces and nephews.

Her father, Clifford Hance, her mother, Isabelle Hance, sister Kathleen Brady and two brothers, Michael and Phillip, died before her.

A memorial service for Ernie Hutt will be held Saturday, July 27, 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Gouverneur. A reception will immediately follow. Burial with military honors will be in Riverside Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Ernie, 94, passed away on January 13, 2019.
