Carlton had a lifelong passion for learning, in addition to his bachelor's degree, he went on to receive a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1958, his Ph.D. from Clarkson in 1963 and a master’s in business administration from The Citadel in 1982.

Carlton had a distinguished career as a research chemist and received numerous patents as a result of his work. He began his career at Merck Pharmaceutical in Rahway, N.J. After earning his master’s degree, he worked as a chemist for Esso in Elizabeth, NJ until 1960 when he accepted a job with Latex Fibers Industries in Beaver Falls, N.Y.
