Romayne (DeHoff) Hartshorn

Romayne (DeHoff) Hartshorn was born on April 16, 1942, in Philipsburg, PA. She passed away on March 25, 2024, just shy of her 82nd birthday, after a decline in her health.

Romayne is survived by her loving children and their families: Robert Henry Hartshorn, his wife Holly Worthington Hartshorn of Wilton, NH, David William Hartshorn and his wife Dr. Rocio C. Pasion of West Chester, PA. “Grandma Ro” will be dearly missed by her beautiful grandchildren Fletcher, Marshall, Piper, and Dempsey Hartshorn.

Romayne was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob) Wagner Hartshorn, her mother Irene DeHoff (Nana) and her father Raymond DeHoff.

Romayne graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Millersville University in 1964, majoring in Library Science and Social Studies. In 1973 she received her Master of Education from Millersville University.

From 1964-1966 Romayne worked as a Librarian at Joseph M. McVey Elementary School in Newark, Delaware. From 1966-1974 Romayne worked as a School Librarian at Rising Sun High School in Rising Sun, Maryland. Then for the next thirty years (1974-2004), Romayne was a librarian for the Gouverneur Central School District at all levels: elementary, junior high, and high school. During her tenure as a librarian and teacher in Gouverneur, Romayne expanded the library collection, automated the libraries, and participated in New York State Title 3 Technology Grants. Romayne’s fondest school memories were meeting with former students who now as parents themselves share their own memories of their time in the libraries that Romayne served.

From 1976 to 1986 Romayne and her husband Robert (Bob) Wagner Hartshorn owned and operated WIGS Radio Station AM and FM in Gouverneur, NY, as well as WTPL Radio Station in Tupper Lake, NY.

Romayne had a passion for reading throughout her life. She also enjoyed sailing on Lake Ontario with her husband Bob and two children on their 28-foot sailboat “Watercrest”. During her retirement, Romayne enjoyed traveling and spending time with her sons’ families and her grandchildren. At Foulkeways, her retirement community in Pennsylvania, you would often find Romayne playing board and card games with friends.

During her twilight years she found a way to always smile, be a social butterfly, and still find the time to read four books at a time! We love you Mom, Romayne, Grandma Ro! You will always be in our memories, and we know you will be watching over us.

In lieu of flowers, Romayne’s family requests donations to be made in her name to the Gouverneur, NY Public Library at www.gouverneurlibrary.org or 60 Church St. Gouverneur, NY 13642. If anyone would like to share a story/memory of Romayne with the family, please email her son, David Hartshorn at mbadave77@icloud.com and he will share Romayne’s stories with the family.
