The Gouverneur Summer Block Party on Sunday, July 26 carried the bright, unmistakable energy of a new tradition taking shape.
The Gouverneur Summer Block Party transformed Gouverneur Village Park and Church Street into a midsummer festival space filled with music, food, and the steady hum of neighbors enjoying a warm afternoon and evening together. By late afternoon, families had settled into the park, children raced toward the bounce house, and the first groups of friends were gathering near the stage for the free concert by The Common Revolution. Their music drifted across the lawn and down Church Street, drawing more people into the celebration as the evening unfolded.
Faithful readers of the Gouverneur Tribune Press will recall that The Common Revolution is a high‑energy local rock and country band known for their tight musicianship and crowd‑pleasing setlists. The group features Dean Matice on lead vocals and guitar, Alex Prespare on lead vocals and guitar, and Gaige Gonyeau on drums. The Common Revolution drew from their wide repertoire throughout the block party, blending classic rock staples, modern country hits, and fan‑favorite sing‑alongs that resonated with all ages in attendance. The band was positioned on an OTR Trucking (Gouverneur, NY) flatbed truck and much gratitude was extended to the band’s supporters. The band’s energy encouraged many North Country residents to kick up their heels with their friends and neighbors on Church Street and in the Gouverneur Village Park.
Throughout the three-hour event, the Gouverneur Police Department played a central role in shaping the flow of the event. Officers implemented a traffic and crowd control plan that kept the celebration safe and comfortable for everyone attending. Church Street was closed to vehicles, turning the roadway into a pedestrian plaza where people could move freely between the park, the vendors, and the music. Officers maintained a steady presence that helped families feel secure as they enjoyed the evening. With cars gone, the street quickly became a dance floor with couples swaying to the music, and others dancing under the warm summer sky.
North Country residents also enjoyed the vendors and food trucks, bounce houses, dunking booth, face painting by First UMC Gouverneur, and more. The whole scene felt relaxed and welcoming, a reflection of Gouverneur’s community spirit and the excitement of trying something new together.
Adults moved easily through the event with beer or wine in hand, a scene made possible by a key decision earlier in the month. At the July village board meeting, Village of Gouverneur Chief of Police Darren Fairbanks recommended temporarily suspending the village’s open container law specifically for the Summer Block Party. The Village of Gouverneur Board of Trustees approved the change, allowing responsible alcohol consumption within the designated event area during the scheduled time slot. The decision added to the festival atmosphere and gave local residents the chance to enjoy something they had not previously been permitted to do legally in the village park.
At the village board meeting on July 21, Village of Gouverneur Deputy Mayor Charles Newvine shared his hope that the Gouverneur Summer Block Party would grow in the years to come and become a lasting summer tradition in the community. The turnout, the energy, and the smiles throughout the event suggested that the community felt the same. Local dignitaries, business owners, and North Country community residents are still abuzz about the event, and look forward to future music events in the Gouverneur Village Park.
The Gouverneur Summer Block Party, sponsored by James Maloy American Legion Post No. 65 and presented by Newvine’s NAPA Auto Parts, turned out just as organizers hoped. It became a warm midsummer gathering that felt like the start of a new tradition—one that could keep growing and bringing the community together for years to come.
