Martha Mary Willenbacher, age 92 of Ogdensburg, but formerly of Gouverneur, passed away on Friday, July 08, 2016 at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.
Martha was born on November 6, 1923 in Gouverneur to the late John A. and Eula M. (Liscum) Willenbacher.
She graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1942, then, graduated from Canton College with a certificate in Evening Division.
Martha worked as a bookkeeper for the Tribune Press for 17 years, where she did payroll and bookkeeping. Then, she worked for Gouverneur Talc for 23 years, where she typed up their orders. Martha retired in 1983.
Martha taught Sunday school for 46 years. One Sunday the church dedicated the service to Martha.
She was a member of the 4-H Club and won trips to Ithaca and Albany. She was also a member of the Grange #303; the Gouverneur United Methodist Church; Gouverneur Business Women; she was the assistant superintendant of 4-H at the St. Lawrence County Fair and was a member of the Outlook Club. She enjoyed gardening, loved traveling, collecting pig figurines and lighthouses and she also made jewelry.
There were calling hours for Martha on Thursday from 1p.m. to 2p.m. with her funeral immediately following at 2p.m. in the Brown’s Chapel of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth Quick. Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery in Richville. Arrangements were with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Donations may be made in Martha’s memory to the Gouverneur Museum or to the Gouverneur United Methodist Church.
