Wilbur Scott Yerdon, age 78, of Gouverneur, passed away on March 3, 2017 at his daughter, Kim’s home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
There was a funeral for Scott on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fowler Baptist Church, where he was a member, with Pastor Howard Maxson officiating. Burial followed in the East Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home in Gouverneur.
Scott was born on November 11, 1938 in Boylston, N.Y. to the late Wilbur and Helen Kastler Yerdon. He graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1956, received his B.S. in Industrial Arts from SUNY Oswego on June 6, 1965, and his Masters degree in School Administration from St. Lawrence University on May 7, 1977.
Mr. Yerdon began his career teaching Industrial Arts at Gouverneur High School and later became the Supervisor of Transportation for the Gouverneur Central School District. His career continued as an Occupational Planner for St Lawrence-Lewis BOCES.
Scott later became a Supervisor of Education for the New York State Department of Corrections, concluding his career in this capacity at the Gouverneur Correctional Facility, where he retired on June 22, 1998.
Scott married Loretta J. Bartholomew on August 13, 1960 in Lacona, N.Y. and enjoyed 45 years of marriage.
Loretta passed away on March 19, 2006. Scott loved his family, good food and great friends. Over the years he enjoyed operating his tractors, riding his Harley, boating on the St. Lawrence River, building and flying his ultralight airplane, target shooting, and driving his BMW convertible.
Scott served on the Mars Hill Good News Translator Committee for WMHR Gouverneur Christian Radio, in a technical and advisory capacity for many years.
Scott is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; Kimberly and Hal Hall of Antwerp, Lisa and Jeff Kirker of Philadelphia; a brother and sister-in-law, Jamie and Bonnie Yerdon; five grandchildren, Megan Hubbard, Kaitlin Hall, Lizabeth Hall, Benjamin Derrigo and Tessa Derrigo; three great-grandchildren, Lyla Grega, Paxton Hanno, and Maverick Hanno; and nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Loretta; and his sister, Sherry Balcom
