GOUVERNEUR – Ivan “Hop” D. Matice, age 67, of Gouverneur, passed away on August 19, 2017 at the Gouverneur Hospital surrounded by his wife and children. Calling hours was held at French Funeral Home in Gouverneur on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Ivan, known as Hop or Papa, was born on August 17, 1950 in Gouverneur to the late Webb Matice, Sr. and Fern (Fields) Matice. He attended the Gouverneur Central School and married Sharon VanOrnum on August 18, 1979 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church.
Hop worked as a janitor for the West Side Elementary School for many years. He also worked for a meat packing plant in Brier Hill, was a janitor for Palms Restaurant, and most recently worked for the NYSARC Bottle Redemption Centers in Hermon and Gouverneur.
Ivan enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. He was a well-liked man who seemed to know everybody. Despite being disabled, he loved life and was a true fighter. He loved watching his grandkids play sports, eating his nightly Hershey bars and riding his scooter. Lately he has enjoyed watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, the Price is Right, and the nightly news.
His survivors include his wife, Sharon; three children, Jason Matice, Michael Matice and his wife, Alicia, Heather Matice and her partner, Stefan Evans; a brother, Carl Matice; and two sisters, Christine Reynolds and Rose Fifield. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Gavin Evans, Audrina Evans, Joseph Hogle, Jonathan Hogle; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Ivan is predeceased by three sisters, Shirley Jones, Norma Dusharm, Sue Dashnaw; and four brothers, Alvin and Webb Matice, and Don and Allan Aldridge.
