Walter F. Payne, 92, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Highland Nursing Home in Massena.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 13th at 10:00 am at Hailesboro Cemetery with Rev. Richard Mayforth, pastor of Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church officiating. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Walter was born on October 4, 1926, the son of Charles and Doris (Lamb) Payne.
He attended Gouverneur schools and lived on the family farm on the Smith Road most of his life.
Walt attended electrical classes and did some electrical contracting while operating the farm. He also drove a milk route for Borden's Milk, worked for the Oswegatchie Power Company, and for 46 years operated Payne Brothers Shop in Hailesboro with his brother Don, specializing in small engine repairs and sales.
Walt had been a member of the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum, the Odd Fellows, and enjoyed collecting marbles, hunting, fishing, and had obtained a pilot's license.
He is survived by his brother Donald and Memory Payne of Gouverneur, a niece Janet Fleming, 2 nephews Alan Fleming and Carl Fleming. He is predeceased by his parents and a sister Betty Fleming.
