Richard Arthur Hatch, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Wilmington, NC on August 28th, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard, “Dick”, was born in Ogdensburg, NY on August 26,1942 to Richard Hatch and Mary Fuller Hatch.
Richard shared a wonderful life with his beloved wife, Mary (Messier) whom he married on October 23, 1959. Mary was the love of his life. Together, they raised their family in Gouverneur, NY, before relocating to Wilmington, NC, to enjoy their well-deserved retirement years. Family gatherings and visits from their children and grandchildren were cherished moments for Richard and Mary.
As a young man Richard worked as a farmhand, a construction worker, and as a milkman for Mercer's Dairy, His true calling came when he went to work for St. Joe Minerals Co., where he dedicated 45 years of his life to mining zinc. As a hoist operator, Richard became a master of his position, ensuring the safety of his fellow miners for over 35 years.
Richard found joy and fulfillment in his wide array of interests. He was a sports enthusiast, coaching his four boys in little league baseball and basketball. His prowess on Hatch court earned him the nickname "The Veteran," thanks to his impressive two- handed jump shot. Richard's love for boxing and wrestling was unrivaled, attending numerous championship bouts and Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. He held great admiration for boxers Carmen Basilio and Mohammad Ali. Additionally, he was an avid jogger, and could be seen running along route 58, rain or shine, for many years.
He was a devoted member of the Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department for over two decades, forming lifelong friendships and becoming an exempt Fireman. Throughout his life, whether through his work, the fire department, or the communities he lived in, Richard established strong connections and formed enduring friendships that lasted a lifetime. Richard and Mary loved attending church together throughout the years and this was a special part of their life together. They were also an active member of the Lifepoint community church in Wilmington, where his faith provided him with strength and guidance. Richard found solace and guidance through his relationship with Jesus.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, and their four sons: Michael and Jodi Hatch of Sylvia Lake, NY; James and Ginger Hatch of Cary, NC; William and Tammy Hatch of Wilmington, NC; and Scott and Chris Hatch of Wilmington, NC. His grandchildren: Eric and Jennifer Hatch, Jennifer and Matthew Knight, Alex and Lora Hatch, Tyler Hatch, and Ryan Hatch. His great-grandchildren, Charlotte Hatch, Violet Hatch, and Miles Knight. They will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Mary Hatch, and his great granddaughter, Nora Claire Knight.
In honoring Richard's wishes, there will be no funeral services. Instead, a private celebration of his life will be held at a later date, allowing his loved ones to gather and commemorate the impact he had on each of their lives.
