James H. Smith, of New Windsor, NY entered into eternal rest on August 19, 2025 at his residence. He was 78 years old.
The son of the late William Smith and Retha (Hitchman) Smith, James was born on September 5, 1946 in Gouverneur, NY.
James was Vietnam Veteran who honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1964 through 1989 and retired as Sergeant First Class.
After his retirement from the Army, he took on another career at The New York Military Academy (NYMA) in the town of Cornwall on Hudson, NY as a TAC officer for 6 years and then was the director of buildings and grounds for 18 years. He retired from NYMA in 2013 after 24 years.
James is survived by his beloved wife: Barbara J. (Eibert) Smith at home; by his son: James H. Smith, Jr. (Rosemarie) of Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY; by his daughter: Paulie Mackay; by his grandchildren: Ryane (Nick), Sara (Camilo), Jenna and Michael; by his great-grandchild: Luca; by his brothers: Hollis Smith and Mark Smith (Kay) and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his son-in-law: Mark Mackay; his sisters: JoAnne Rose, Sally Matejcik, Pansy Bowhall and by his brothers: Denver and Patsy Smith.
Memorial Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A Chapel Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27th at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will follow the Service at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Craigville Road, Goshen, NY.
