Barbara was born on January 6, 1958, in Canton, New York, to the late Clifford Bullock and Thelma “Sally” (Smith) Bullock. She attended Edwards Central School and married Charles Newcombe on May 24, 1980, at the Edwards United Methodist Church.
For 30 years, Barb dedicated herself to serving others through Meals on Wheels in St. Lawrence County. She drove hundreds of miles making sure to check on each client and provide them with warm meals every day. During the last ten years of her career, she served as manager of both the Edwards Nutrition Site and then the Star Lake Nutrition Site. Alongside her work, she worked at her parents’ dairy farm in Edwards. In retirement, one of her greatest joys was caring for her great-grandson, Jameson, over the past four years.
Barb was a member of the St. Lawrence Valley Ayrshire Club spending many years showing Ayrshires at the fair. She also served as a 4-H and Girl Scout leader for many years. Barb found great happiness in her kitchen, where she became well known for her cakes, mac and cheese, jams and jellies, pickled beets, eggs, peaches, pears, spaghetti sauce, and applesauce. Family and friends eagerly anticipated her annual tradition of playing the Easter Bunny, secretly delivering her famous cookies in the middle of the night.
She also enjoyed riding her buggy through the woods at all hours of the day, taking in the wildlife, peaceful scenery, and beautiful sunsets. Barb could often be found spending hours picking blackberries, making sure there were enough berries for pies and jam throughout the year. She faithfully supported the Edwards United Methodist Church, helping raise funds through her homemade pies and jam and jelly baskets during church suppers.
Barb is survived by her beloved husband of 46 years, Charles Newcombe of Edwards; her children, Lisa Newcombe of Canton, Jeff Newcombe and his girlfriend, Grace of Ogdensburg, Aaron Newcombe and his wife, Alicia (Burligame) of Potsdam, Brenda Coronato (Bullock) and her husband, Steve of Raeford, North Carolina, Melissa Daniels (Newcombe) and her husband, Albert III of Cicero, and Louise “Lorianne” Coronato (Newcombe) and her husband, Shaun of Budd Lake, New Jersey.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sadie Hall (Hart) and her husband, Kenny, Ashley Hart, Connor Newcombe, Carter Newcombe and his fiancée, Cassidy Hargrave, Charlie Daniels, Molly Daniels, Grace Daniels, Faith Coronato, Sabrina Coronato, Elizabeth Coronato, and Katalina Newcombe.
In addition, Barb is survived by her sisters, Carole LaVoie (Bullock) and her husband, Dave, and Joanne Lynn (Bullock) and her husband, Rick, William Bullock Sr. and his wife, Sheila, and Larry Bullock and his wife, Debbie, along with many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Nothing brought Barb more happiness than her great-grandson, Jameson. He often declared, “Mema makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches,” and she had a remarkable knack for getting him to eat and nap when no one else could. She enjoyed taking him on long buggy rides and taking turns watching each other's shows. She made sure Jameson was happy and he is a smart little boy because of her.
While Barb touched many lives through her work and service, her greatest legacy is the love she gave to her family.
At one time she made a comment that when the time came, she said that at her celebration of life and services, “don't wear black at my funeral”.
Memorial donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Edwards United Methodist Church, Hospice of St. Lawrence County, or the Edwards Volunteer Fire Department.
