OBIT _ James Brian Robarge pic copy.jpg

James Brian Robarge, 57, a resident of La Porte, TX, passed away on Friday, Aug. 6, 2021, in San Antonio, TX.

James – or, “Jim” – was born in Oceanside, NY, on Oct. 23, 1963, the son of Thomas Robarge Sr. and Joan Starr. His family eventually moved to the Hermon, NY, area, where Jim was often found sledding, building tree forts, or getting into mischief around town with his siblings and friends. He graduated from Middletown High School South in Middletown, NJ, in 1981.

Following graduation, Jim served in the United States Navy from 1981 to 1985 and received training as an aviation electronics technician. He would go on to pursue a career in engineering at cogeneration power plants, and recently observed his 20-year anniversary as an employee of Calpine Corporation as a Turbine Engineer Specialist III.

Jim pursued his hobbies and interests with incredible enthusiasm, from playing soccer, golf and basketball, to spending time outdoors. He loved riding his motorcycle, and even explored places like Cambodia and Thailand by bike. Jim also enjoyed camping and relaxing with the family dog, and was known to have the occasional cigar or glass of scotch alongside a James Bond or John Wayne movie. Most of all, Jim was best known for his sense of humor, sharp wit and for how much he enjoyed spending time with his friends. No matter where he went, Jim brought laughter to all those who knew him.

But undoubtedly, Jim’s greatest joy in life were his two daughters, Briana and Nicole, whom he loved watching grow up. As a family, they shared countless family dinner nights, road trips and hours spent watching cartoons together (especially Bugs Bunny).

Jim is survived by his two daughters Briana Robarge and Nicole Robarge of La Porte, TX, his father Thomas Robarge Sr. of Potsdam, NY, and his mother Joan Starr of Lehigh Acres, FL. He is also survived by his siblings Suzanne Desimone of Virginia Beach, VA, Thomas Robarge Jr. of Ogdensburg, NY, Jacqueline Robarge of Baltimore, MD, and Danielle Rusk of Atlanta, GA, three nieces and nephews, and his uncles and aunts Dan, Kathy, Terry and Pat, and several cousins.

Funeral services are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Mark Warren Taylor

OBIT _ Mark Warren Taylor pic copy.jpg

Mark Warren Taylor, age 67, of Greensboro, passed away Sunday, August 1 , 2021 at home surrounded by his wife and children. He was born on September 25, 1953 in Gouverneur, NY. He is the son of Norton Warren Taylor and of the late Joan Brickey Taylor. Mark graduated high school in 1971 from Gouverneur Senior High in Gouverneur, NY. He studied and graduated from SUNY Jefferson in 1974 and State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1976. He moved to Greensboro shortly after and met and married the love of his life, Rita, in 1980.

Mark had a passion for creativity and owned his own sign and neon company, Sign Management, for nearly thirty years. After retirement, he took his sign business knowledge and skill and began a sailboat logo company. He enjoyed this because it mixed his passion for the business; plus, the love of sailing. You would find Mark volunteering in his children’s schools and teaching science lessons about his love for neon and electricity. He also came to many career days at his daughter’s school when she was teaching. He was a natural teacher and loved helping children. For several years, Mark helped fifth graders learn about sailing in the Virginia area. He would charter a boat with students; showing and teaching them how to sail. For some of the kids, it was their first time on the water and on a boat.

Mark is preceded in death by his mother, Joan Brickey Taylor.

He is survived by his father, Norton Warren Taylor of Gouverneur, NY, who just celebrated his 99th birthday. Mark is survived by his wife Marguerite “Rita” Taylor, his son, Christopher Warren Taylor and wife Lauren of Cary, NC; daughter, Ashley Taylor Moritz and husband Adrian of Charlotte, NC; his sisters, Patricia Hunt and husband Mark of Ohio, Lisa Joseph and husband Phil of Vermont; grandchildren, Anna Henderson Taylor, David Warren Taylor, and Lillian Taylor Moritz.

This past year, Mark and Rita celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows. They were able to write and read their own vows in front of friends and family. It was a beautiful day of celebrating love and the life they had built.

Mark had a passion for skiing, a love for sailing and enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He wore many hats, but the one that made him the proudest, was being a “Gramps,” to his three grandchildren. Gramps’ house was always full of laughter and lots of baking treats for the grandchildren. Mark never met a stranger and loved meeting people. He had this ability to make you feel like you were the most important person in the room when talking with him.

You could always see Mark enjoying the little things in life and spending time with his beloved wife, Rita. They spent almost every night sitting on their front porch, talking and enjoying one another. This was their spot; and it brought both of them so much joy. They also enjoyed spending many weekends at their condo at Smith Mountain Lake. Mark began the love of the lake from his early childhood. He learned how to sail at a very young age and developed this passion from his beloved mother. His passion led to Mark owning many sailboats throughout his life. He loved sleeping under the stars, exploring the lake and spending time with his lake family and Rita. Mark was a long-standing member of the VISA Yacht Club at Smith Mountain Lake. This is where he met his lifelong lake friends that became family.

Mark will be remembered for his amazing heart, for the way he saw life, for the way he lived in each moment; taking nothing for granted. But most importantly how he loved. He found humor is almost everything and knowing him, was loving him. He fought a courageous battle with illness and was given precious time to spend his last year, months and weeks knowing how many people loved him. During his illness, his children surprised him with a video of personal messages, songs and pictures sent in from family and friends. The video ended up being over two and a half hours long. It was a true testament of how much everyone adored Mark. He sat and enjoyed the video, laughing and crying and being able to witness the love people had for him. Mark will be greatly missed by so many, but his family is so thankful that he had a personal relationship with the Lord and feels at peace knowing he is in the arms of Jesus.

A Celebration of Life Service for Mark will be held on Saturday, September 25th at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 am. The Celebration of Life service will take place at 11:00 am.

Barbara Van Slyke Anderson

OBIT _ Barbara Van Slyke Anderson pic copy.jpg

Barbara Van Slyke Anderson died June 13, 2021, in Albuquerque, NM, the daughter of former Gouverneur NY Mayor, William M. Van Slyke and Gertrude Slice Van Slyke. She graduated from Gouverneur High School as salutatorian of the Class of 1940. She then graduated from Cornell University in 1944.

She went to Poston, AZ during WWII to teach English at the Japanese relocation camp and then taught at Ganao, AZ Presbyterian Mission School.

In 1948, she married Douglas Brownell Anderson, the trader at Roundtop Trading Post adjacent to Ganado Mission and together they raised three children in Ganado. There until 1985, she learned the names of plants, tracked migrant birds and the paths of the stars, moon and sun, taught piano, loved music, learned enough about how the Navajo language worked to be helpful when she went back to teach junior high at Ganado Public School, earned her master’s degree in education from Northern Arizona University, and hosted many a visitor and family gathering. She was organized to a T, which is how she could get supper ready for a dozen guests even though the nearest grocery store (besides Roundtop) was 56 miles away. For almost 40 years, she threaded her way between two cultures, imperfectly for sure, but with thought and attention, and by the grace of good friends.

She was a reader and a writer. She wrote about every little thing and kept notes and letters in yearly folders – for 60 plus years! In 1963, she and Doug collaborated on a book about Canyon de Chelly – her writing and his photograph, and in 1972 they produced another about Chaco Canyon. After retirement in 1985, when they moved from Ganado to Cochiti Lake, NM, she wrote her memoirs.

In 2010, she published a book “That’s The Way It Used To Be,” about the Ganado Presbyterian Mission and her life there. There is a copy of her book in the Gouverneur, NY Public Library.

After 11 more years of retirement in Glendale, AZ, she moved to Albuquerque, NM. In her last year, shut in with COVID, and no longer hearing or seeing well, she would say, “I’m glad my windows face west,” knowing they looked out over the valley to three volcanoes and the broad space beyond, knowing it was filled with many things.

Barbara is survived by her brother, W. Barton Van Slyke, M.D. and his wife, Anna, their three sons David (Sue), Steve (Sharon), and Marty (Cindy), and her daughters Cecelia (Jeff) and Kathryn; grandchildren: Emily, Matt, Claire, and Mariel. Great-grandchildren are Anderson and Hayes. Preceding her in death were her husband Douglas, son Douglas (Brownie), Jr., and Anderson in-laws, Seymour and Rosalie, Alan and Ruth, and Lowell and Barbara. She will be missed by many, including nieces and nephews, dear friends – all those people who filled her life over the span of years. Contributions can be made in her name to the Northern Arizona University Foundation, Office of Native American Funds Initiatives, P.O. Box 4094, Flagstaff, AZ 86011.
