Beth L. Livingston

Funeral services for Beth L. Livingston, age 98 of Heuvelton will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday (April 5, 2024) at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home in Ogdensburg.

Calling hours will also be held on Friday from 11:00am until the time of the service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur alongside her parents. Beth passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 1st at the Samaritan Summit Village in Watertown after a day with family.

Surviving are three sons and their families, Lee and Pamela Livingston of Norfolk, VA, Karl and Tracey Livingston of Heuvelton, and Gerry Livingston of Heuvelton; five grandchildren, Katie, Tatiana, Jennifer, Nathan and Noah; four great-grandchildren Dahlia, Emma, Brodie & Landon and several nieces and nephews.

Beth was predeceased by her former husband, Gerald, in 2001, three sisters, Mary Wicks and Doris Cring of Harrisville, and Claire Miller of Ogdensburg, and four brothers, Leland, Charles, Walter, and Karl Parker of Gouverneur. A fifth brother died in infancy.

Born Beth Lucille Parker June 24, 1925, in Gouverneur, Beth was the youngest of nine children born to Charles Parker and Bertha Howard. She grew up in the Town of Fowler where she enjoyed family, reading, gardening, and outdoor sports. Through her teen years she enjoyed skating, picking berries, family outings on the south shore of Sylvia Lake, which her family held for four generations, and the chaperoned dances at the Gouverneur High School when, in the early 1940’s, young soldiers were bussed in from nearby Pine Camp (now Fort Drum). One of her greatest pleasures throughout her life, however, was swimming, which she pursued into her early 90’s at every possible opportunity.

As a child, Beth survived Scarlet Fever and experienced family and neighbors helping one another during the Great Depression. In the fall of 1941, her family was one of over 500 families displaced by the expansion of Pine Camp in the days leading up to WW II and watched as nearly every young man in her graduating class was called to war. Her parents relocated to the Town of Oswegatchie, but she remained in Balmat with her brother and his wife to finish her senior year at Gouverneur High School. She graduated in 1942 a few days shy of her 17th birthday.

Although she dreamed of continuing her education, life intervened and Beth joined many other local area women to work at the Cleveland Container Co. in Ogdensburg during the war years to fabricate cardboard containers used to ship munitions. The war ended in September 1945. Beth married Gerald Livingston of Heuvelton on November 17th in Ogdensburg the same year. Although initially settling in Lisbon, they relocated to their beloved farm on the Oswegatchie River outside of Heuvelton in 1951 where they raised three sons. In 1962 they purchased a failing sawmill and millworks in the village of Heuvelton to create the Heuvelton Lumber Co. which, over the next 20+ years, employed many and served a wide community. Beth served as the company’s accountant, attending night school, and working closely with Federal, State, and other officials to gain the skills needed.

Throughout it all, Gerald and Beth remained active within the Wesleyan Methodist and Methodist Churches in Heuvelton and Galilee, worked tirelessly to maintain their home and farm, and enjoyed their life on the Oswegatchie and their various travels across the U.S. Beth loved her vegetable and flower gardens, and although she claimed she learned to cook only after she was married, her simple country meals were renowned. Her most sought-after dish, perhaps, was her apple pies made from the Duchess apples grown on the farm.

Beth was particularly proud of her Parker heritage and her family’s longtime connection to Gouverneur. Her great-great grandparents, both children of Revolutionary War veterans, arrived from New Hampshire and settled along the south shore of Black Lake in about 1808. Her great-grandfather, John Lee Parker, and grandfather, DeElbert Parker, in turn, were longtime residents of the village of Gouverneur and the nearby area. They and their descendants were successful farmers, entrepreneurs, professional and skilled workers who owned businesses and homes and have long been a part of Gouverneur’s history.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Claxton Hepburn Foundation, 214 King Street, Ogdensburg, NY 13669. Condolences and fond memories can be shared online at www.foxandmurrayfuneralhome.com.

Later, she earned her M.S. in Reading from SUNY Potsdam and continued as a Special Education Teacher for Harrisville Central School as a Resource Room Teacher for many years. Mary treasured her trips back to Eliot to visit with family and spend time at York Beach, rarely missing an opportunity to take another picture of the Nubble Lighthouse.

Many will remember Mary as an avid walker. Mary and a few of her friends walked regularly through Hailesboro along the Country Club Road to the Jones/Weldon Road for decades. Eventually, the people changed and the routes varied. In recent years, until midway through this January she was still walking two miles a day.

Mary was very much loved by her family and friends. She will be missed by many.

Shelley J. Prashaw

Shelley J. Prashaw, age 62, of Richville, passed away April 1st 2024 surrounded by loved ones at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Shelley was born on February 7th, 1962 in Gouverneur, NY to the late Elinor and Glen “George” Besaw. She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1980 and later returned to school to graduate with a degree in Accounting from SUNY Canton. She married her husband Eugene Prashaw July 26th 1980, and together they had 4 children- Casey and Lindsey Prashaw, Craig and Whitney Prashaw, Eliza and David Dusharm and Corey Prashaw and Jenna Tabakaru. Each child brought a new family to love with 9 grandchildren and countless “4 legged grandbabies” as she so often called them. Shelley has four siblings; Glen Besaw and his wife Kathy, Steven Besaw, Elizabeth Daniels and Ellie Jo and her husband Herbert Simmons. Shelley is predeceased by three sisters; Kathy Phillips, Karen Gilson and Anne Powers.

Shelley worked most recently at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center in Ogdensburg and as the Village Clerk of Richville. She previously held roles in Accounting, Human Resources and Hospitality. Although her favorite job was her duty as a Mother, “Nanny” and Caretaker of her community. It is well known that Shelley came into your life as a person that was immediately invested in your well-being and success. Having had open arms and the thoughtful care that really only a mother could have. Each person who stepped into her life could agree that she had a certain commitment to you. She would make sure you were fed, listened to and that you got a great big hug. Never once did you have to question if she would be there. Often times showing up when she never had to, just for the sake of being there in case something great happened.

Shelley enjoyed her time with family and building a life with those that she loved. As the years passed, she spent her days by the water at Lisbon Beach, alongside her loving husband and children. Having a drink, making a fire, watching the grandbabies create memories so incredible they could be written into a memoir, and waiting for her youngest son to make his world famous smore. She would always share the same stories every trip to Lisbon beach. Each time the stories unlocked a different part of her that lit her up with joy. She would so often tell stories of her own parents and the love they shared for each other. Displayed most prominently in our memory by the picture that hung in her home of her mother and father dancing. The way she could recall the passion they had for each other and the longing she had to see them again would always make us hurt. Although now at peace- we’re hopeful she is somewhere, sitting on a comfortable chair somewhere by the water, elated in the vision of her parents dancing again.

At this time Shelley’s family has decided to have a Celebration of Life for her at Shelley’s second home, Lisbon Beach. The date will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.

They finally settled down in Gouverneur in 1965 when Floyd secured a position as a Guidance Counselor at Gouverneur Central High for the next 23 years. During this time, Kathleen taught nursing at Canton College and later became the Director of Nursing Services at EJ Noble Hospital in Gouverneur. After retiring in 1988, they spent the next 34 years spending 6 months at their Camp on Jones Pond outside of Edwards and 6 months at their place on Jekyll Island, GA playing golf and walking the beach. It was a great life!

Floyd & Kathleen are survived by their son Sean, his wife Gretchen (Youngman), granddaughters Brigid, Clare, and Kara, daughter Margaret, her husband Alex, and granddaughters Marie and Cassidy.

Their family is planning a joint Remembrance Service at Gunnison Memorial Chapel, St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY this Spring/Summer. In leu of flowers, a donation in their memory to the Potsdam Humane Society, 17 Madrid Ave, Potsdam, NY 13676 (www.potsdamhumanesociety.org) would be appreciated. In the meantime, we ask all friends & family to raise a toast to them both and to their lives together.
