Thomas E. Maginn, age 88, of Oneida N.Y., formerly of DeGrasse, passed away on Wednesday, December 28th, 2016 at Crouse Community Center, Morrisville, where he had been a resident for the past 2 ½ years. Tom became a resident of the Hazel Carpenter Home in Oneida in October of 2011.
Thomas was born on March 30, 1928 in Potsdam, to the late Frances and Catherine (O’Brien) Maginn. He graduated from North Lawrence High School in 1947. He entered into the United States Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1952.
Tom married Avis A. Furgison on October 3, 1950 at the Winthrop United Methodist Church. Avis passed away on June 3, 2007.
Tom originally worked for many years in the home dairy delivery business. Tom then worked as a Tow Motor Operator for the Newton Falls Paper Mill, retiring in 1991. He is a life member of the Massena VFW Post 1143 and was past chief of the DCSR Volunteer Fire Department. Tom enjoyed watching sporting events, especially his beloved Yankees and spending time with family. He was a very caring man who was known for his contagious smile and keen sense of humor.
Surviving are a son and his wife, Mark and Laurie Maginn of Oneida, four grandchildren, Rebecca (Kevin) Ellwood of Schenectady, Benjamin (Erica) Maginn of Foxboro MA, Holly (Nathan) Waterfield of Cherry Valley and Michael Meehan of Roseboom, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Tom is predeceased by his wife, Avis, and his parents and a brother, Robert Maginn.
Calling hours were on Wednesday, January 4 from 12p.m. to 1p.m. at French Funeral Home in Edwards with his funeral service immediately followed at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Clare.
Donations may be made in Tom’s memory to the DCSR Volunteer Fire Department, or the Hazel Carpenter Home, 533 Main St. Oneida.
