Elizabeth “IB” J. Stowell, age 93, Gouverneur, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at RiverLedge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, surrounded by her family.
Elizabeth was born on April 13, 1924 in Rossie, to the late Winfield and Fern (Hendrick) Goodison. She attended school in Rossie and then graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1941. After high school, she then went on to Watertown School of Commerce for secretarial.
Elizabeth married Charles D. Stowell on June 30, 1946 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Harold Thomas officiating. Charles passed away on February 6, 2005.
Elizabeth was the secretary at the Gouverneur Co-op for 22 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of Tops. She enjoyed doing word jumbles and loved doing the adult coloring books. She also enjoyed going to bingo and just being social. At the nursing home they called her “The Mayor” and she was also crowned the Queen.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Jeffrey and Connie Stowell; a daughter-in-law, Joanne Stowell; a sister, Rosemary Otto and four grandchildren and was Nanabell to nine great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband; a son, Timothy Stowell who passed away in 2015, and a sister, Frances Collins.
There were calling hours for Elizabeth on Monday, April 24, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 2p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur with her funeral service immediately following at 12 p.m., with Lay Pastor Judy Sibley officiating.
There will be a burial for both Elizabeth and Charles on May 6, 2017 at 10 a.m. will military honors at East Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur.
