Marvin B. Matthews, Sr.

Marvin B. Matthews, Sr., age 89, of Gouverneur, passed away on September 3, 2024 in Massena.

Calling hours will be held at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Friday, September 13, 2024 from 11:00-1:00 with his funeral service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Skip Edie. Marvin was born on June 29, 1935 in Canton to the late Heman Matthews and Myrtle (Storrin) Matthews who survives him. He graduated from the Knox Memorial High School and attended Canton A.T.I. before enlisting into the United States Navy. Mr. Matthews served in the Navy from 1954 until 1958 as a Machinist Mate in the engine room of USS Borie.

He married Janice E. Smith on June 27, 1957 in Lincoln, ME. The couple lived in Moira before moving to Gouverneur in 1967. Janice passed away on November 12, 2013. Marvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf.

Marvin retired in 1994 as Line Foreman for Niagara Mohawk after 32 years of employment there. He had previously worked for Necoosa Edwards Paper Company as a laborer and for Reynolds Metals on the pot lines.

His survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Jo Bowen of Brushton and Carolee Sue and Denis Premo of Gouverneur; his daughter-in-law, Connie Matthews of Pitcairn; a brother and his wife, Thomas “Gary” and Sue Matthews of Canton; and four sisters, Lewana Bullock of Roxbury, Elizabeth VanBrocklin of South Russell, Dale Hovey of Degrasse, and Delight VanBrocklin of Pasadena, Texas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Janice Matthews; sons, Gregory William Matthews and Marvin B. Matthews, Jr.; and a brother Heman Matthews.
