Alice C. (Turnbull) LaTray

Alice Carrie (Turnbull) LaTray passed peacefully at home with family by her side on October 11th, 2025 at the age of 93.

She was born November 9th, 1931, on Johnstown Road, Gouverneur, N.Y., the daughter of Clifton A. and Martha E. (Denecia) Turnbull.

She raised nine children in Northern New York and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

She worked at Little Jim’s Diner and Idol Hour as a waitress/bartender in Syracuse, N.Y., for many years.

She moved to Gettysburg in 1971 where she retired from Knouse Foods and then worked part time as a receptionist at A.L. Fence Co.

In 1998, she moved back to Northern New York with her son, Donald, until she moved to Florida in 2004 and resided there for 19 years. She then moved to Roanoke, Va., with her children in 2023 until her passing.

She was an active member of the American Legion, Amvets, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Moose and V.F.W. for over 40 years.

She enjoyed country music, dancing, karaoke, time with family & friends and traveling. 

Her favorite color was red.

She is survived by three sons, Glenn Shampine of Dade City, Florida,  Donald LaTray and Stanley LaTray & wife Doreen of Roanoke, Virginia; and three daughters, Suezette Macdermott & companion Bobby of Brooksville, Florida, Karen Sickler of Athens, Tennessee and Karla Petry & husband William of Etowah, Tennessee. 

She has 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

One brother, Ernest Turnbull & wife Bonnie of Dover, Tennessee; and several nieces & nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Martha & Clifton Turnbull; two brothers, Gordon & Donald Turnbull; two sons, Douglass Shampine & Charles LaTray; and one daughter, Geraldine Shampine.

A family graveside service will be held at our Turnbull family plot at the Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur, N.Y. on June 20th at 11:00 AM. Followed by her Celebration of Life at 12:30 PM, at the Gouverneur VFW, 100 W. Main St., Gouverneur. Family and friends welcomed.
