Lionel Carlos Griffith

Lionel Carlos Griffith, 82, passed away Monday, September 30, 2024 at his home in Portland, Oregon.

He was born June 14, 1942 in Gouverneur, New York, the son of Carlos and Ercile Belmore Griffith. He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1960. Lionel enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was an electronics technician. Upon leaving the Air Force, he was employed at Proctor and Gamble in sales and promotions.

A graduate of San Francisco City College majoring in photography, Lionel had a photography studio while employed with the U.S. Postal Service. Moving to Portland, Oregon in 1975, he was employed at Rose Auto Salvage in the counter sales department. He retired after 30 years.

Lionel married Suzanne Suppo. They later separated, but remained lifelong friends.

Lionel is survived by a son Jules and Kelly Griffith (Melbourne, Australia), a daughter Denise and Jeff Hills (South Lake, Texas), and grandchildren and children Scarlette Griffith, Coltrane Griffith, Collette Hill and Corrine Hill, brothers Mike Griffith and Hazel Deremiah (Gouverneur, NY) Stephen Griffith (Gouverneur, NY) and Donald (Kathy) Griffith (Holton, Kansas), a sister Brenda (Gil) Streeter (North Gouverneur, NY), and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a mother, father and sister, Elsie Brown.

Robert F. Lallier, Jr

It is with tremendous sadness that the Lallier family announces the unexpected passing of our beloved brother, Bobby, on October 4, 2024. Bob was recently undergoing cancer treatment.

Robert Francis Lallier, Jr. was the oldest son of the late Robert and Ann (Baker) Lallier.  He was born in Watertown, NY on December 7, 1953 and spent his childhood in Gouverneur, NY.  He graduated from Gouverneur High School, where he participated in sports, choir, many extra-curricular activities and excelled academically. He continued his education at the Coast Guard Academy and graduated in 1976. After serving his time as a Coast Guard officer, he earned his Masters degree in Environmental Engineering and started his engineering career at NASA’s John Glenn Research Center in Sandusky, OH, where he worked until his retirement. Although he loved returning to his hometown for family events and his favorite member-guest golf tournament, Ohio became his home. An avid lover of all sports, he never missed a Cleveland Indians opening day and enjoyed watching football at his favorite watering hole with friends. It was in Cleveland, where he met the love of his life, Jennifer Rogers.  They married on January 16, 2016.

Bobby always led with his heart in everything he did and with everyone he touched.  He was an avid reader, an expert Jeopardy and Trivia game player and would play cards like a shark. He started each day with his coffee and the NY Times crossword puzzle, which he could complete in no time. He was a loving brother, devoted uncle to all his nieces and nephews and a faithful friend to so many.

Bob is survived by his wife, Jennifer, his sisters Jeanne (John) Sheridan, Mary, Susan, Anne (Joseph) Reilly, and Catherine (Michael) Patneaude, and his brothers John (Elizabeth), James (Tari), Daniel (Diane) and Francis (Michele) and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his niece Nicole Lallier.

Funeral services will be held in Cleveland, Ohio and a celebration of life will be held in Gouverneur at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to St James School, 20 S. Gordon St, Gouverneur, NY  13642.

Shawn J. Roberts

Shawn Jon Roberts, affectionately known as “The Joker”, age 61, of Gouverneur, NY passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY with his family at his side. Shawn was recently diagnosed with Esophageal cancer.

Shawn was born on November 22, 1962 in Gouverneur, NY to the late Arnold and Muriel “Pat” (Ferron) Roberts. He graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1980 and then attended North Country Community College, where he studied Ski Area Management. Shawn also attended SUNY Canton later in life where he studied Performance Motorsports. Shawn enjoyed creating art and music, as well as theatre performance and traveling. He lived an adventurous life. His experiences included Sky Diving in Nevada and biking to Boston and back. He was always the life of the party.

Surviving is his daughter, Megan Roberts and her companion Gary McIntyre; a grandson, Brock Aldridge; five siblings, Shirley and Don Putman of Sylvia Lake, Doug and Connie Roberts of Gouverneur, Arnie and Jackie Roberts of Richville, Judy and Bob Harper of Florida and Amy and Mike Corbett of Watertown and several nieces and nephews, he was labeled as the fun uncle!

Shawn is predeceased by his parents and a brother, Robert “Bobby” Roberts.

Sallie Jo Emrich

Sallie Jo (McBroom) Emrich, 60, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Upstate Hospital in Syracuse.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 6th, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm with a funeral service at 2:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Following the service, a celebration of life will be held at the Gouverneur VFW from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

Sallie was born on April 8, 1964 in Gouverneur, the daughter of Dorothy Tharrett.

She attended Gouverneur schools and received recognition as a certified nurses aide.

Sallie worked for E.J. Noble Hospital and Gouverneur Hospital for nearly 30 years, taking great pride in the care of her patients.

She married Alan “Al” Emrich on February 14, 2001.

Sallie enjoyed listening to music and singing, spending time with her pets, friends, and family, and taking the time to assist help in need whether it was at work or out in the general public. She was also known to enjoy a cold one here and there.

She is survived by her husband Al, her children Heather Jesmer and Vance Jesmer, her grandson Nathan Watson her siblings Richard Tharrett, Allen McBroom, Lorraine Stowell, Connie LaBow, and Judy Nichols, many nieces and nephews. Sallie is predeceased by her parents Dorothy McBroom and William Mouck, siblings Robert McBroom, Ed McBroom, Gary Tharrett, and Linda Stowell.

Kenneth Wolf

Keneth Wolf, age 67 years, passed away unexpectedly at his farm in Gouverneur on September 25, 2024.

Born in the city of New York to Joan and Walter Wolf, Ken graduated from St. Francis Preparatory School and attained a degree in Ancient History from Queens City College.

Ken had a lifelong passion for learning. He loved his books, reading the New York Times and meeting new people.

Ken served as a trooper with the New York State Police for twenty years, retiring in 1999.

He married Claire Griffith in 1984. Together they operated the family farm, raising and exhibiting prize winning Corriedale sheep and wool.

Ken enjoyed making hay and supplied many local farmers with square bales. He cared deeply for the farm and the many friends he made there.

His journey here has ended. He will be greatly missed.

Bonnie Lee Moosbrugger

Bonnie Lee Moosbrugger left this world with grace and faith to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September, 20, 2024, in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Born in Gouverneur, New York, on July 24, 1944, to the late Paul Peters and Theresa Fuller. Bonnie's life was a testament to the power of unwavering faith, love and the strength of the human spirit. Bonnie was the beloved wife of the late Robert J. Moosbrugger "Moosie" and was the loving mother of the late Scott P. Raven. She was also the cherished sister of the late Carolyn Gamble.

Her legacy continues through her surviving children, Eric Raven and Megan (Michael) Sihle, and her five grandchildren, Gentry (Jennifer) Raven, Gabriel (Rob) Raven Muirhead, Sonia Raven, Elliot Sihle, and Remi Sihle. She is also survived by her sister, Phyllis Wells, and brother, Stuart (Diana) Peters. She graduated from Gouverneur High School and chose to raise her family in Gouverneur, until relocating to Florida over 20 year ago. Bonnie's work ethic shone brightly as she co-owned and ran RJM Line Construction and Gentry's Clam Cove restaurant alongside the love of her life, Robert. Both businesses weren't just establishments, but, for many years, successful additions to the Gouverneur community.

Bonnie had many interests, but, she cherished God and her family above all. She always said, God comes first, family next, and then work and friends. Nobody loved like her, yet she was loved by so many. Bonnie's friends were her treasures, and she valued every moment spent in their company, whether it was on beach walks, enjoying good food and wine, or simply relishing the precious gift of life. Bonnie was a living example of what it means to walk in faith, love and conviction and she imparted this legacy of faith to her family. Her selfless nature meant that she always put others before herself, making sure those around her were cared for and cherished. You get to meet our Maker mom, we love you and will miss you beyond words, but we will see you up there. John 11:25-26 Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die."

Margaret Ann Hill

Margaret Ann Hill, 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 14, 2024, with her loving husband, Edmund S Hill, and family at her side in Leesburg, Florida.

Born in Pyrites, NY, on September 16, 1941, Margaret was the daughter of the late Guy and Ethel Rocca. She earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Suny Empire State College. She married Edmund on June 22, 1963 and moved to North Carolina while he served in the Marine Corp at Camp Lejune. Margaret’s career as a nurse included Jacksonville NC hospital, Gouverneur EJ Noble Hospital and St Lawrence Public Health in Gouverneur, NY. Maggie retired in 1999. She and her husband split their time between Gouverneur and Florida, before settling fulltime in Leesburg, Florida in 2007.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edmund Hill, her daughters, Kathleen (Frank) Pinnola, Middletown, NJ, and Kimberly (William) Reed, Gouverneur, NY, and by four grandchildren, Justin Reed, Alicia Cornell, Frank Pinnola, and Thomas Pinnola. Margaret loved her six great-grandchildren; Madelyn, Allison, Adelle Reed, and Gage, Reed, and Colt Cornell. She is also survived by three brothers, Guy Rocca Jr, Michigan, James Rocca, North Carolina, Robert Rocca, Virginia, her special Aunt Marion, several beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Margaret was predeceased by her brother, Charles Rocca.

Maggie enjoyed creating gifts and teaching her artistic talents, which included ceramics, stained glass, quilting, sewing, and painting. Maggie’s artisan-stained glass windows are showcased in local churches, funeral homes, and many of her family’s homes. She also loved outdoor activities, including gardening, hiking, and boating at Lake Bonaparte. Maggie was a member of the Gouverneur Garden Club, Elks bowling league and was a life-long communicant at St. James Church. Throughout her retirement, Maggie and Ed enjoyed traveling which included trips to Alaska and Hawaii and many cruises.
Margaret held dearly the company of her family and friends.  
The family held a private prayer service in Florida. A celebration of life will be planned in Gouverneur NY in 2025.

Robert “Bob” C. Pelno

Robert “Bob” C. Pelno, age 91, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024.

Bob was born on July 15, 1933 in Tupper Lake to the late Floyd Joseph and Florence Mary (Savard) Pelno and attended Tupper Lake Central School. Mr. Pelno served in the United States Navy from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1958. He was a machinist aboard the destroyer, John R. Craig 885 and the USS Bradford 545. After that he served in the National Guard for 3 years. He married Sarah “Sally” Northrup on February 4, 1989. Sally passed away on November 3, 2023.

Mr. Pelno worked for Newton Falls Paper Mill for 35 years, first in production, then in the Electric Shop the last 8 years. He enjoyed camping on Crooked Creek, watching television, and hunting and fishing. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion.

His survivors include his five children, Clayton and Laurie Bright, Robbie Pelno, Clayton Pelno and George Terrell, Thomas and Jessica Pelno, and Jennifer Pelno and Doug Roberts; his step children, Danny and Maryann Foley, Kenny and Trish Foley and Denise and Jeff Regan. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bob is predeceased by his wife, Sarah “Sally”; parents and his brothers, Bill, Harry, Larry, Don, Lorne, and Ivan Pelno.

There will be a graveside service for Bob on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Hubert’s Cemetery in Star Lake with military honors. A Celebration of Bob’s life will follow at the American Legion in Star Lake. Arrangements are with French Family Funeral Home in Star Lake. Bruce H. Gleason

Bruce H. Gleason, 88, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 in Maine.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 19 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm with a memorial service at 3:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home in Gouverneur. A burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur and a reception will be held at the Gouverneur Presbyterian Church at 4:30 pm.

Bruce was born in Gouverneur on October 14, 1935, the son of Harvey L. And Dorothy (Fredenburg) Gleason.

He and his younger sister Mary grew up at 65 Barnes St. in Gouverneur. When his mother passed away, his father remarried to Margaret Herring.

He graduated from Gouverneur High School where he was on the baseball team in 1953 and from Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania where he joined the ATO fraternity and graduated in 1957. Bruce received a charter property casualty underwriter designation in 1982.

He achieved the rank of captain in the United States Army reserves, serving nearly 10 years.

Bruce married Elizabeth Jean Kirchner on August 12, 1961 in Collinsville, IL.

He was employed with New York Life Insurance Company for 7 years and in 1965, established Bruce H. Gleason Agency. Bruce eventually merged to become MacFadden-Dier Travelers Agency in Canton and retired in 1996. He also worked as a tax preparer since 1957.

Bruce was a member for over 50 years and former worshipful Master of Gouverneur Masonic Lodge #217 where he was also district deputy for the 1st St. Lawrence district and had served as treasurer since 1978. He was a lifetime member of the Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church since 1947 where he served as deacon and elder for many years. Bruce was an associate member of the Orr’s & Bailey Island United Methodist Church in Orr’s Island, Maine, of which he served on the board of trustees and the finance committee.

Before retirement, Bruce and Liz spent several weeks each summer on the coast of Maine. Upon retirement, the couple purchased a home on Bailey Island, Maine, where they spent many enjoyable summers looking out at the ocean.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his sons Thomas E. Gleason , David A. and daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Flanagan) Gleason, 3 granddaughters Margot, Madeline, and Maeve, a sister Mary Colton, nieces and nephews.

Jennifer Hay

Jennifer Lynn Hay, age 48, of Gouverneur, passed away on September 11, 2024 at Carthage Area Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be held at the Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Visitation from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m. A private burial will be held at the Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Jennifer was born on October 5, 1975 at the RRH Gouverneur Hospital to Cheryl (Swift) Hay and the late Scott Hay. She graduated from Gouverneur Central School in 1993 and worked for Jones and Doldo Agency in Star Lake and Kemper Insurance in Syracuse. Jennifer also worked as an LPN at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center followed by working as the Assistant School Nurse for the Gouverneur Central School District.

Jennifer enjoyed going for long walks around town with her daughter, Madelynne. She had a deep passion to help those less fortunate and offered a caring smile with an abundance of love to all who knew her.

Jennifer is survived by her daughter, Madelynne A. Hay-Spano who is the daughter of the late Steven F. Spano, her mother, Cheryl Hay, sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Brian Scheider, her step-mother, Wendy Hay, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Jennifer is predeceased by her father, Scott Hay.

Sharon Lee Kelley

Sharon Lee Kelley, 82, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Sitrin Health Care Center.

She was born on December 4, 1941, in Utica. Sharon was the daughter of the late Lee G. and Vera Byrns Kelley. She attended New Hartford schools, graduating in 1959. Sharon went to SUNY Cortland graduating, 1963. In 1969, she earned a master’s degree from the University of Iowa while teaching at the undergraduate level. She taught elementary physical education for many years in Gouverneur, NY, taking early retirement to return to New Hartford to care for her mother. Sharon had a deep love for nature and wildlife, especially moose. Summers at the family cabin on Moose River in Old Forge, many trips with special friends to Pleasant Pond in Maine and the trips with her Theta Phi sisters to Camp Pine Knot on Raquette provided Sharon with some of her happiest memories.

Sharon was always active. She swam in National Senior Olympics in Orlando, FL, Hampton Roads, VI, Pittsburgh, PA and Louisville, KY. She played volleyball for more than twenty years and enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing. She authored two books, Life Reflections and Joyful Living.

Sharon accepted the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease with courage and the determination not to let it control her life. Through physical therapy and her positive attitude, she was able to continue to travel, write poetry, participate in Senior Readers Theater and to serve on the board of the Parkinson’s Support Group going well into her 70s.

Sharon is survived by her brother, Norman Kelley (Mary) of New Hartford; godson and nephew, Christopher Lee Kelley; nephew Matthew George and many, many Friends.

In keeping with Sharon’s wishes, there will be no formal services. Her ashes will be spread in the Adirondacks. Arrangements are with Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.

Carol E. Andre

Carol Elva Andre, 86, of Kutztown, PA, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospice in Bethlehem, PA. Born on April 3, 1938, in Canton, St. Lawrence County, NY, she was the daughter of the late Denver Davis and Marion D. Davis (Hall).

Carol was a proud graduate of Gouverneur High School, class of 1955. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who touched the lives of many. Carol is survived by her loving husband, Joseph G. Andre, of Kutztown, PA, and their children: Joseph Andre (wife, Sandy), Robert Andre (wife, Denise), David Andre (wife, Kimberly), Aaron Andre (wife, Karla), Kimberly (Andre) Haraske (husband, Glenn), Debra Andre, Teresa (Andre) Zettlemoyer (husband, Mark), and Jeanne (Andre) Holman (husband, Ted). She was also blessed with 29 grandchildren,39 great-grandchildren and one great great grandson, who brought immense joy to her life. Additionally, she is survived by her step-brother, Gary Smith.

Carol was predeceased by grandson Jeremy Andre, brother ralph Davis, step mother Ruth Davis, step father Stanley Smith and step sister Bonnie Claflin.

A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc. A second viewing will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at St. Mary’s R C Church, 14833 Kutztown Rd., Kutztown, PA, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM. Judy Ann Bigelow

Judy Ann Bigelow, 73, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Judy was born in Gouverneur on August 15, 1951, the daughter of Howard and Marjorie (Hills) Morse.

She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1969.

A marriage to Kenneth Mussaw ended in divorce.

Judy married Kevin Bigelow on August 21, 1976.

She had worked as a bartender, for Bette & Kring of Watertown, for Casablanca Restaurant, and the couple had operated Bedrock Backyard Barbecue until 2000.

Judy enjoyed her home where she and Kevin raised animals like chickens and fish in the ponds, took care of their gardens, canned vegetables, and spent time with friends and family.

She is survived by her husband Kevin, her sons Kenny and Kara Mussaw of Oneonta, Adrian and Angie Bigelow of Lisbon, Kevin Jr. and Danielle Bigelow of Hermon, several grandchildren, a great grandchild and another on the way. Judy is also survived by her sisters Norma Reynolds of Gouverneur, Linda Hance of Florida, several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, a bother Gary Morse and a sister Lorraine Bell.

Martin “Marty” James Haenel

Martin “Marty” James Haenel, age 77, of Waddington, NY, passed away on August 21, 2024 at Massena Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, 60 Maple Street, Massena.

Marty is survived by his wife, Vicky Haenel of Waddington, NY; their children, William F. Haenel II and his wife, Lizette, of Norwood, NY, Danielle LeClair and her husband, Michael, of Waddington, NY, Natalie McKnight and her husband, Travis of Chase Mills, NY, and Dustin Haenel and his companion, Amanda Perkins, of Waddington, NY; fourteen grandchildren, David, Samuel and his wife, Kimberly, Quentin, Benjamin, Gabriel, Leneah, Addison, Greyson, Kayson, Henderson, Noah, Isabella, Emilia, and Enzo; a sister, Ellen Mrozcko and her husband, Thomas, of Greenville, TN; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marty is predeceased by his parents, William and Betty Haenel.

Marty was born on January 20th, 1947, in Ithaca, NY, to the late William F. and Betty (Thom) Haenel. Marty was a graduate of Gouverneur High School in 1965. He attended Kent State College in Ohio, and North Country community college where he earned an associate degree. Marty married Vicky Moulton on May 23, 1974, in Waddington, NY, with the justice of the peace officiating.

His varied career began as a radio announcer at WPDM in Potsdam, followed by roles as an animal technician for Dr. Bartlett in Madrid, NY, and an artificial insemination technician with Eastern AI. Marty then transitioned to the technology field, working as a computer consultant at North Country Community College and as a computer technician for St. Lawrence Lewis BOCES and Albany BOCES. He later owned and operated Clear Data Solutions with his son Dustin, servicing businesses in the North Country for nearly 40 years until his retirement.
Marty passed away leaving a legacy of dedication and service to his community.

Marty was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts, earning a Life Badge and participating in the 1960 Boy Scout Jamboree. He also coached 5th and 6th grade basketball for Madrid-Waddington School. Marty had a passion for computers, he enjoyed cooking and woodworking, he took pride in building several pieces. He loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports, traveling in his 43' motor home, and camping at various locations, especially Myrtle Beach. Marty will be remembered for his contributions to his community, his love for his family, and his many hobbies and interests.

Mary J. Whalen

It is with deep sadness the family of Mary Whalen bids their Aunt farewell on the morning of September 5, 2024 as she embarks on her final journey reuniting her with her parents and beloved brother. In her extraordinary lifetime, Mary traveled the world, exploring each of the seven continents often including family in her adventures and many times with a horse or canoe in tow.

Mary Josephine Whalen was born on June 8, 1928 in Canton, NY to Fleeta Arlina Powers and Charles John Whalen both natives of Gouverneur. With her older brother Robert leading the way she quickly became the outdoor lover and nature enthusiast she would remain for the rest of her life.

Mary attended Canton schools and upon her high school graduation enrolled at St. Lawrence University. She graduated from SLU in 1949. This past spring she attended her 75th College Reunion and was the oldest Alumni in attendance. Her support and love for her Alma Mater continued throughout her lifetime. As the owner of Whalen House, a Bed and Breakfast she operated in her Canton home, she hosted many SLU families and many hockey parents as part of her devotion to the Hockey Boosters. As recently as last season she could be seen in the stands in her reserved seat at the SLU Hockey Games walking the loop between periods.

Following graduation, Mary began a teaching career that touched the lives of many elementary age students and later many struggling with reading. Her career started in a reform school for girls eventually leading her back to Canton where she found her calling teaching in elementary grades and later remedial reading. She continued her education receiving a Masters in Education at SUNY Potsdam and later a Masters from Syracuse University with a specialty in Reading Skills. In recognition of her accomplishments in teaching, Mary was invited to join the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women in Education, a group she in which she made many great friends and continued an active membership in for over fifty years. When asked, she described one of the high points of her teaching career as the years she was the first ever Coach of the Canton High School Women’s Swim Team. She thoroughly enjoyed coaching the team and leading them through several successful championship seasons. The CHS girls were not the only ones who benefitted from her coaching skills, over the years she taught hundreds of Sylvia Lake kids to swim. In her younger years she spent a few summers as waterfront director at 4H Camp Overlook in Owl’s Head, NY.

Her love of outdoor sports began early on swimming with her brother at Sylvia Lake where she grew up spending summers. She loved canoeing and snow skiing in the winters. At college she took up horseback riding and judging from the wall of ribbons at Sylvia Lake she was pretty good at it. Her love of riding and travel took her on horseback adventures throughout Montana and other western states and a couple of Ireland tours.

Mary loved reading, mostly biographies, history and nature. A lifelong learner she was an active member of SOAR and presented many programs over the years and attended many others well into her nineties. Her curiosity about our local history and of the Adirondacks meshed well with her commitment to her community. When the vision to create the Silas Wright Museum came to fruition, Mary was there with sweat equity as well as financial support. She was a lifelong supporter of AARCH a group that actively supports the preservation of Adirondack architecture and history. She was a charter member and early supporter of the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. Locally she was one of the first members to sign up for what became a large contingent of adult skaters when the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club was founded in 1953. Her legacy in the community can be seen everywhere. The tradition of flowers on the lamp posts in the village was started during one of the many years she served as President of the Canton Garden Club. During those years many of the heirloom trees at the Silas Wright Cemetery and the Buck Street Playground were planted. The Blue Star Plaque in front of the Municipal Building acknowledging Blue Star families for their sacrifice was largely due to her efforts. The Canton Study Club is a group close to her heart and she faithfully served as President and then Historian for many years. These are just of few highlights from her busy and productive life. Mary was never one to say no to an adventure an outing or a cup of coffee with her one or two or more of her many friends. Her presence in our lives will be sorely missed.

Mary truly loved her family and was always generous in sharing her spirit, adventures and talents. She is survived by her nieces and nephews Cathy (Joe) Siematkowski, Joanne (Bruce) Shick, Don (Joanne) Whalen, Mike Whalen (deceased), Roberta (Jim) Yaeger and Julie (Brad) Catling, nine grand nieces and nephews and five great grand nieces and nephews.

Friends were invited to pay respects to Mary’s life at the Lawrence Funeral Home on Monday. A private funeral was held on Tuesday morning with Rev. Michael Catanzaro officiating. Marvin B. Matthews, Sr.

Marvin B. Matthews, Sr., age 89, of Gouverneur, passed away on September 3, 2024 in Massena.

Calling hours will be held at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Friday, September 13, 2024 from 11:00-1:00 with his funeral service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Skip Edie. Marvin was born on June 29, 1935 in Canton to the late Heman Matthews and Myrtle (Storrin) Matthews who survives him. He graduated from the Knox Memorial High School and attended Canton A.T.I. before enlisting into the United States Navy. Mr. Matthews served in the Navy from 1954 until 1958 as a Machinist Mate in the engine room of USS Borie.

He married Janice E. Smith on June 27, 1957 in Lincoln, ME. The couple lived in Moira before moving to Gouverneur in 1967. Janice passed away on November 12, 2013. Marvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf.

Marvin retired in 1994 as Line Foreman for Niagara Mohawk after 32 years of employment there. He had previously worked for Necoosa Edwards Paper Company as a laborer and for Reynolds Metals on the pot lines.

His survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Jo Bowen of Brushton and Carolee Sue and Denis Premo of Gouverneur; his daughter-in-law, Connie Matthews of Pitcairn; a brother and his wife, Thomas “Gary” and Sue Matthews of Canton; and four sisters, Lewana Bullock of Roxbury, Elizabeth VanBrocklin of South Russell, Dale Hovey of Degrasse, and Delight VanBrocklin of Pasadena, Texas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Janice Matthews; sons, Gregory William Matthews and Marvin B. Matthews, Jr.; and a brother Heman Matthews.

Ronald Paul “Duffer” Mashaw

Ronald Paul “Duffer” Mashaw, 72, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Massena Hospital.

There are no calling hours or funeral services. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Ron was born in Gouverneur on December 23, 1951, the son of Janice Mashaw.

He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1970 and lived in the area all his life, Duffer married Barbara Tamblin on June 24, 1973.

He worked for AGWAY Petroleum, the local zinc mines, and for himself raising cattle and hauling stone.

Duffer enjoyed fishing, cutting wood, building things, woodworking, and telling jokes, some not so clean. Most of all, he enjoyed family time, especially the grandkids.

He is survived by his wife Barb, his children Lisa M. Mashaw and her companion Ernie Turnbull of Florida, Ronnie and Jeri Mashaw of Gouverneur, his grandchildren Nicole and Brandon Washburn, Michael Lamar and companion Kate Benson, Katelynn Green, Colt Sommerhauser, Jillian Mashaw and companion Joel Spellicy, Gage Mashaw, and Ronnie Mashaw, his great grandchildren Grayson, Delaney, Briggs, Crue, Tagg, and Grey. He is also survived by his mother Janice Watson of Tennessee, several siblings, nieces and nephews.

Karl C. Parker

Karl C. Parker, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on August 27, 2024 at the age of 82.

Karl was born in Gouverneur, New York, the son of Virginia Pascoe and Charles Parker. He graduated from GHS in 1960. He received Bachelors and Masters degrees in counseling at the University of Kentucky and attended UC Berkely in a doctoral program. Karl moved to Napa in 1976 and worked as a counselor for the State of California for over 40 years.

He will be remembered as among the kindest of men, with a willingness to laugh at himself and life, and be helpful to all.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha, and sons, Jeffrey and Thomas, stepdaughters Jennifer and Carrie, six grandchildren, and his sisters Linda O’Brien, Connie Pascoe, and Pam Cima.

He will be greatly missed.

Derek Earl Noble

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our son, Derek Earl Noble, age 44, of Watertown, NY, who passed away unexpectedly on August 9, 2024.

He was born on December 6, 1979 in Gouverneur, NY to Richard (Ric) E. Noble, and Stephanie (Coates) Witherell and graduated from Gouverneur High School, class of 1998. After graduation, Derek worked in a variety of occupations including delivering furniture in Southern New Hampshire for a period of time. After returning to Northern New York, he worked for Gouverneur Talc, and worked in the building and electrical trades up until he became disabled.

Derek, together with his brother Ricky, was an avid New England Patriots fan in the midst of Buffalo Bills country, and loved sporting his Pats gear. He also enjoyed exploring the woods with his father, playing on his iPad, eating ice cream, and especially going for milkshakes with his nephew Canelo and niece Cataleya. One of the last things he did before he passed was to help his father and sister Wendy build a wooden swingset for her grandchildren, a memory they will hold dearly.

Derek was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Claude and Ruth (Mashaw) Noble, and maternal grandparents, Earl and Marjorie (Woodworth) Coates. He leaves behind his father Ric Noble, mother Stephanie Witherell and step-father David Witherell, as well his sister Wendy (Noble) Borrun and her husband Leonard Desrochers, brother Danny Noble, brother Ricky Noble and his fiancé Bleu Bermudez, sister Kylee Noble, as well as 11 nieces and nephews, and a great niece and nephew.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 1st at 11:00 am at Mullins Restaurant in Gouverneur.

George Erdman

George Erdman, a longtime resident of the College Walk Community in Brevard, North Carolina, passed away at Transylvania Regional Hospital on Sunday, August 4th, 2024. He was 95.

The son of G. Emery and Gladys Erdman, he was born on September 24, 1928, in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. He was the second of five children. His high school yearbook accurately described him as a “congenial fellow who is a master of wit and information.” His college education was interrupted when he was called to serve his country during the Korean Conflict. A member of the Army Corps of Engineers, he was sent to California and then Alaska as part of a topographic surveying battalion. Upon returning, he graduated from Lehigh University in 1950 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering. He moved to Upstate New York to take a position with the Gouverneur Talc Company. He was quickly promoted to Mine Superintendent and then to Vice President and General Manager of operations.

It was in Gouverneur that he met the love of his life, Jeanette Nuffer, a local school teacher, on a blind date arranged by mutual friends. Married in 1958, George and Jeanette valued family, church, and hard work above all. Their love for each other and their four children was a cornerstone of their lives. George was a proud member of the Gouverneur Masonic Lodge and also served for many years on the local hospital board of trustees.

After George’s retirement in 1990, they moved to Brevard, North Carolina, and became faithful members of Brevard First United Methodist Church. George went on several church mission trips and volunteered in the building of more than 50 homes with Habitat for Humanity. He and Jeanette continued to enjoy travel, golf, and watching their family grow. A fiercely devoted husband, George cared for her until her death in 2021.

During his years at Brevard’s College Walk Community, George enjoyed the Monday night Brew Crew, monthly pizza parties, social and cultural events, and particularly “Bett’s Bar,” when he would commune with his neighbors in the driveway and enjoy conversation and an adult beverage. His close-knit friends, neighbors, and staff there greatly enhanced his quality of life.

George is survived by his sister Carol Ann, four children: George VI of Gouverneur, New York, Jennie of St. Helen, Michigan, Sarah of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina, and Dan of Gouverneur, New York; his ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; Geneva Drakeford, special to the family, of Tega Cay, South Carolina; and sister-in-law Joan Dando, who loved him like a brother.

A service to celebrate his life well-lived will be held on Saturday, August 17th, at 10 a.m. at Brevard First United Methodist Church. All are welcome. George was ever mindful of life’s blessings and was extremely generous.
