Myra J. Copeland

Myra J. Copeland, 77, of Gouverneur, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Gouverneur Hospital.
A celebration of life was held on Thursday, October 27 from noon to 3p.m. at the Gouverneur VFW. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Myra was born in Westville, N.Y. on August 24, 1939, the daughter of Harvey and Hazel Robinson Jones.
She attended schools in the North Country and attended Mater Dei College.
Myra drove bus for NYSARC, worked as a waitress, was employed at the Tru-Stitch Factory in Malone, and owned Myra's Corner Pub in Massena.
She enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino, shopping, and liked to go out dancing with her family.
Myra is survived by her longtime companion, Edward McBroom, her brother Donald Jones of North Carolina, her sister Esther and Wayne LaRocque of Bangor, nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents, a son Scott Pitts, and a sister, Margaret Vermette.

K. Daniel “Danny” Slate

K. Daniel “Danny” Slate, 83, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Riverledge Health Care in Ogdensburg.
A graveside service will be held and announced in the spring. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
Danny was born in Ogdensburg on July 11, 1933, the son of Kenneth E. and Mildred Santay Slate.
He graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1953 and served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 as a vehicle and heavy equipment mechanic.
He married Laura Mae Serviss on July 30, 1954 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Laura passed away on November 23, 2008.
Dan worked for Drummond’s Dairy for five years, during high school and for a year after graduation. Upon honorable discharge from the army, he worked as an auto mechanic at Dodd’s Motor Corp. for three years.
In 1959, Dan partnered with his wife Laura and Denver Davis as Wilson Street Garage and eventually operated a service station at 300 West Main Street as West Side Atlantic.
Danny enjoyed fishing, going to camp, racing stock cars, and his work at the garage. He was a member of the Gouverneur VFW.
He is survived by his three children Ronald and Roxanne Slate, Randy Slate, Robin and Russell Young, all of Gouverneur, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dan is also survived by a sister Martha Liscum of North Carolina, several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife Laura, a brother, Ronald Slate, a sister, Dolores Jones, and two great granddaughters Cassidy Young and Macy Slate.
Memorial donations in Danny’s memory may be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley or St. James School.

Graveside service: David Bigelow & Donna Hayes Bigelow

A graveside service for David Bigelow who passed away March 16, 2015 and Donna Hayes Bigelow who passed away February 29, 2016 will be held, Saturday, August 20 at 2 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery, Richville.  
Family and friends are invited for a short service and committal of their ashes.
A reception to be held immediately following the service at the Richville Fire Department, 71 Main Street, Richville.

Louise McCarty

Louise M. McCarty, age 89, of Degrasse, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Highland Nursing Home in Massena.
Louise was born on July 17, 1927 in Degrasse to the late Garnold and Cherrie (Bates) Hance. She attended Knox Memorial High School. Louise married Richard D. McCarty on August 23, 1945. Richard passed away on September 19, 1998.
Louise worked in the cafeteria at Canton ATC for many years. She was a member of the Degrasse United Methodist Church, Degrasse Community Club and the Russell Senior Citizens. She enjoyed doing word searches, baking, crocheting and knitting.
Surviving are her six children, Dianna J. and Todd Lambert, Rick L. and Deborah McCarty, Dawn M. and Richard French, Carol A. and Lonny Scott, Katherine L. and Joseph Conklin and Michael P. McCarty; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren and two great-great granddaughters.
Louise is predeceased by her sister, Muriel Barto and three brothers, Howard Francis, and Willis Hance.
Calling hours for Louise will be on Friday, July 29, 2016 from 6p.m. to 8 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Edwards. Her funeral service will be on Saturday, July 30 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Beth Quick officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Clare.
